I totally agree that there needs to be a law about it, but increasing the fine is not the right thing to do. If it keeps on like this they might have to say that the huts have to be pulled off and left on shore everytime you go out.
Sask has an interesting solution to that problem...the day after the shacks have to be off the ice the COs go around and burn any that are left.
No fine
Problem around here Saskie, is that you can't pay them enough to walk out there on "thin ice" in order to strike a match

Nothing that a flare gun won't fix.
When hell freezes over, I'll be there icefishing!!!
If you can't stand behind our troops,
Please feel free to stand in front of them!!!
Experience is that marvellous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again
Say what you want about the unfortunate losses of life that happened this season on the Ottawa (Ottawa area), in both cases, the situations involved vehicle's being driven over area's of current. With the dams fluctuating the water levels of the river in our area, there are spots that are never going to be safe regardless of the temperature's/time of the year.
Just because you see someone out on an area of ice, if you don't know the river/water - DON'T GO!!! It could be a case of an individual knowing the river like the back of his hand and fishing a spot yards from a shoal(on the safe side) and or someone with no knowledge sitting a mere hand full of yards from a potential tragedy. The Sunday fisherman comes along and thinks to himself - "Hey his truck is there, it must be safe".... If you Don't Know - Don't Go!!! Perhaps an ice fishing theme song could be made out of those words...
As for getting the hut's off. It's up to people to manage their own property in this Provence. Not The MNR. They just enforce the laws that we all must/ or at least should abide by. As stated before in this thread, "common sense isn't that common". We had our hut well out at on Shirley's Bay (1.7km's), they weather turned (warmed up) we pulled it off - While it was safe. Simple eh! For those who didn't/can't get their hut's off, I propose this: Follow the weather much closer than you did and if it wasn't the weather - DON'T PUT YOU PERMANENTE ICE HUT in an area that is not stable. b The MNR fines are stiff - they will learn.
I went out (walked) last Sun about 700 meters out off of Shirley's bay - there was 2 feet of ice. An older gentleman I was talking to was walking on the ice near the Sailing club and went thru the ice up to his chest... Guess what, there's current there! He knew it wasn't deep - but any how I digress..........

Few shacks still out on Buchams as of yesterday afternoon.....guys were out on the Bay today with their Tip-Ups......no current where they were.....like CCLad said..use some common sense and if you DON'T KNOW the waters you're adventuring on, then STAY OFF during these Spring conditions....
