Any stream/river mouth is a magnet for trout and salmon at certain times of the year. The trout will cruise the shore line around stream/river mouths. Anglers use long 8-9-10ft long spinning rods(for distance) and hurl their offerings out as far as they can. I used home made egg sacks. and a slip sinker.
Take a skinny rubber band and wrap it around your rod between the first eye and the reel. After the cast set the rod on your holder or bucket. I prefered a somewhat high tip. reel in as much slack as you can. Open the bail and take a small loop of line and put it through a strand of the rubberband. This will hold your line on an open bail. Fish hits, line slips out of rubberband and fish has bait on a free line with no tension.

Will work for rivers...
memories
Great advice and it gave me flashbacks of my grandfather taking me fishing every fall in port elgin/southhampton when I was a kid. The only other thing he would do is ball up a piece of tinfoil around the line at the tip of the rod so you could see a strike, very helpful especially at night. I never actually caught a salmon on any of these trips but I got to stay up all night, drink coffee and listen to my grandfather and his friend tell jokes and swear in english and italian; as a 10 yr old it doesnt get any better than that!DropShot'r wrote:Any stream/river mouth is a magnet for trout and salmon at certain times of the year.
