Dan Smyth wrote:Early eighties aboard HMCS Annaplois in the Atlantic Ocean. Estimated 80 to 90 foot waves. Upper deck out of bounds for 7 days. You could go on the bridge and look out the windows and see nothing but a wall of water and then see nothing but sky as the ship road the waves. Waves were high enough to come into the ship through the boiler air intakes at the top of the funnels.
Lots of sea sick sailors during that time. When it was over there were no guard rails left on the upper deck and all the life rafts were gone.
It was rough enough to tear the gun mount off of HMCS Preserver and I would guess the gun mount weighed about 10 tons.
Not a fishing story but kinda scary.
There are few problems in life which can not be solved with a well-placed, high-explosive projectile.

A water spout is simply a tornado or a dust devil formed over water ... they are quite vicious and can suck a wannabe fisherman/bird photographer right out of a lake, mangle him to little bits and spit him out the other end in seconds flat.... oh we could only wish.......

If you ever forecasted a water spout for lets say the Ottawa river ...Orleans area...I wouldn't hesitate to head right out there and fish....Chances are the forecast in question would be way way off anyhow...

Anybody who has even a low level high school education would know that these things are impossible to forecast as these weather phenomena are way too small and localized.... however if I know where and when you will be, I can get out my voodoo doll and do a special dance/ceremony to try to brew one up for your location...

All I can tell you is the that weather is impossible to predict.... changes all the time.... the fools at the weather network wake up in the morning and script up a random forecast ....
Lets remember that plncrzy has dedicated 20+ years of his life to weather forecasting. He has spent months away from his family, years (plural) living in the arctic, and made a lot of sacrifices along the way. Maybe you should think about that before cutting down what someone does for a living.
Well said Rob....100% agreement from me. I have a ton of respect for meteorologists. A nice stable atmosphere is straight-forward to predict, but toss in the instability and 1000 other variables and it becomes brutally difficult. I have a big interest in tropical weather (hurricanes) and love the online forums when hurricane season arrives. Its fun to look at all the variables that affect the tracking and intensity of them.
