This weekend I fished Wolfe Lake near Westport, Ontario and caught lots of fish, mostly Rock Bass, some the biggest I have ever seen! The lake also has walleye, perch, smallmouth, sunfish and pike. I was on a ladies retreat for church so I was staying at Camp Iawah, Christian camp. I was wondering if there are other places like campgrounds or cottages along the shore where my husband and I could go. The Christian camp gets booked with churches during the summer. The fishing from the dock was fantastic!
pike are on the rise in the lake, thanks to the more abundant weed growth due to increasing zebra mussel populations. I like catching pike, but I'm not too happy about the mussels. I guess it's the silver lining, if there is such a thing when it comes to these wretched things.
Better pike fishing in Wolfe Lake would be in what I call the "north branch" of the lake, that is the part where there are multiple islands. Lots of weed beds back in along the islands and bays, where there is often some deep water accompanying the growth.
I wouldn't say Wolfe is a "pike lake", but we are getting more every year and you could certainly target them and expect to catch some.
Don't see why you couldn't put your canoe in at one of the public launches, although the launch at the south end of the lake would make for one heck of a paddle to get to the north branch. Lots of people kayak and canoe on Wolfe. Your best bet would be one of the two launches on the east shore of the lake -- out of the village of Westport past beer store, Rt 12 to a right on 10th (I think) Concession Rd (launch at end of road) ... or Rt 12 to a right Wolfe Lake Road (launch at end). Both are free.
