Leader for pike?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I hate leaders...

I use Wire leaders when targetting pike during hardwater, but during softwater, generally I don't target pike, so I am generally without a leader, unless the area is Pike infested, then I use Flouro leaders for the odd pike that hits.

I've seen what pike can do to Scuro's own 100lb floro leaders, and so has he. They'll never do that to steel. They're an aggressive fish that floro isn't needed for. Don't take chances with your trophy fish.
I agree with you moosebunk, there is no need to use floro with pike, they are aggressive enough to just use steel leaders
what about 15lb + pike I think they are a differant breed than snot rockets. BTW nice avater Nips

Hey how's it going guys. First time poster, long time lurker. I figured it was time to finally sign up and talk a little fishin. Especially pike , one of my favorites. Barden, I agree totally. Big pike act entirely different than snot rockets. Especially during warm water periods when the big girls vacate the shallows for deep cool summer haunts. I prefer ONLY a snap swivel with your superbraid of choice(mines power pro)for jigging pike. For me a silver leader on " The Larry" is a nono unless its in front of a spoon, jerkbait or large plug. And even then :?: Black has always been a better choice for me in clear waters. I don't bother much with flourocarbon but if I did the St lawrence would be where it is best applied imo. The rideau is to dingy for me to worry about hiding terminal tackle for pike or muskie.

It depends on what your throwing
If your casting Suiks and other heavy stuff then you definitely need 100 lb titanium 12 -18 inches. Spooled up with 65 to 80 lb Power Pro. It is not usually the fish that wears out your leader it's all that heavy casting. If you hook into a 45 inch or larger pike it's nice to have the extra strength. If the fish is in open water and you handle it properly you could land it on 15lb test. ( in fact you could land it on 4lb test but would need to fight the fish to total exhaustion and it's survival rate would drop dramatically) The heavier set up gives you the power to turn her if she is heading for heavy cover or around a log and put enough pressure (but not too much) to subdue rather than exhaust the fish.
If your throwing lighter spoons etc you could cut back to 50lb titanium and maybe 30 lb power pro if you fishing more open water.

Lol...Sounds like you got the fever. I've got a few things to do but not bad. Haven't had the boat running yet, but maybe this week if it warms up a bit. I think I could miss the opener if it meant a trip to the Barbados though  . Should be a blast for you guys. Don't use up all your "luck" when your down there. :P . And you can come fishing with me anytime. I'll gladly show you a bunch of spots where muskies are "suppose" to be. lol. I think the mercury makes them slow learners out there...haha....I don't care I'm usin' it.

50 not good enough

Post by JZ »

Well just found out today that a pike in the 10lb range can bite through a 50lb fluoro leader like a hot knife through butter. However that was with a bucktail which the pike inhaled so he about 4 or 5 inches of the leader in his mouth. If you are using a lure that the pike can't easily inhale and the leader only has incidental contact with teeth and gill plates then I have gotten away with as light as 30lb fluoro.

I use Sevenstrand uncoated 18lb wire and make my own leaders where required. I know wire will not get cut by toothy critters.
