motor problem
hey all.. I have a late 70s early 80s johnson 6 hp motor it runs perfect in neutral but when I shift to forward gear and give er gas she doesnt want to open up....in neutral it will rev fine...any solutions....thanks

Does it rev up in gear? ...or does it just stay at idle RPMs even though you are twisting for all it is worth?jibber wrote:hey all.. Sounds like spark problems. Either a spark plug or coil.
While running in neutral, disconnect one of the spark plug boots. If it dies immediately, the faulty plug or coil is the one that is still connected.
I hope that it is not CDI power pack... they are kind of expensive. Coils and condensers are a lot cheaper!! You may also be lucky and it is just a plug!
Get a cheap spark tester ($5 to $10) from Partsource or NAPA while you buy replacement plugs.
Good luck and post your findings!
