Muskrat tourney this weekend question

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

In any case, I'm heading up there on Saturday to see if I can put into practice what moonshine had taught me (Thank you by the way!) I had never used a downrigger until moonshine taught me how to! How sad am I? !

It wasn't directed at anyone. I guess it was the wrong post to say anything but whats wrong with taking the tournaments to White lake or calabogie or centennial or Ottawa river just to give the lake a rest. That's my opinion anyway but a full boat launch is usually good fishing.

There are multiple lakes that have multiple derbies including Calabogie and Centenial/Black Dondald, Bark Lake, etc, the list goes on and on.

If you could provide your local FMZ advisory council with some scientific proof of the effects of organized tournaments causing harm to a lake. They could take this info back to the Minister of Natural Resources with the recomendation to change the FMZ regulations to include that fishing tournaments need to have a permit process so that the ministry can manage how many events can take place on the same body of water or section of a river each year. That might be a progressive way of making a change for the betterment of fishing for everyone in Ontario.

I guess it was the wrong post to say anything
No it wasn't. It was a good a post as any to say something and the point you raise is certainly a valid one.

There are 3 "regular" bass tournaments that are held on Muskrat every year.

1) Lowe Memorial - First Sun after bass opener. Usually 40-50 boats. A portion of the entry fees to go CHEO.

2) SEBO - The Sun of the Aug long weekend. Usually 40-50 boats. Personally, I think the SEBO organizers should hold this on a different weekend. I think adding 40-50 bassboat to a busy recreational lake on a summer long weekend is just not a very good idea from several angles.

3) Hawg'n'Bass - This is hosted by Valley Bass in mid-Sept. This a "big fish every hour" tournament where only 1 fish is allowed in the livewell at any given time and any bass under 3 pounds usually goes right back in the water. Usually around 50 boats in this one with several father and son/daughter teams and husband/wife teams.

Other semi-regular tournaments held on Muskrat

- Renegade shows up every couple of years with up to 80 some odd boats. With that many boats, my opinion is that Renegade should add more waters to the list they cycle through.

- Petawawa Bassmasters pops in every other year or so with around 25 boats.

- Valley Bass pops in every other year of so with 20-25 boats.

- Each year there might be an ad-hoc outing that some might call a tournament Those are usually word of mouth, are held in Oct when the lake is pretty much empty and maybe 10-12 teams will show up if the weather is OK.

There might be a few smaller tournaments that I don't know about but I've listed all the big ones.

Is this too many tournaments for Muskrat? I don't happen to think so given the reports that come out of there but if there were five or six 50+ boat tournaments there every year I might think differently.

Do tournaments ever give money back to lake organizations to help keep the lake pristine? Just a questions because I don't know the answer. Perhaps people would have different opinions if the organizations that host tournaments were to give something back to the lake rather than take?

I'm not even sure how one would go about something like this but I'm sure it would help people be more welcoming of tournaments. Again, I have no idea but just wondering if things like that take place? I personnaly don't have any negative thoughts against tournaments but if a lake was having 5 or 6 major tournaments each season you would think over the long term it might not be good for the fishery as a whole.

I know with my lake there are 3-4 associations on it so who would you give it to. I do like this idea though. I am sure a few people in a think tank can come up with something to make this work. Heck it may already be the way. Dougs organization seems to run pretty good and may do this already.
Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.

I am curious as to what lake organizations do to keep lakes pristine?
