bass tournaments=dead fish

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I found a good article that might prove or disprove a few of the points that were raised during this discussion.

I am not trying to resurect this discussion but I thought this was pertinent so read on....

Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.

Thanks for the article! It was a great read. I just read the whole post and it's amazing how many experts on tournament fishing that have never fished a tournament. Some tournaments are run better than others but all and all the bass guys take care of their fish well.

Big Bass 444 wrote:Let's hope something will be done about this SOON!....some strict regulations needs to be in place in both provinces to make sure we get basses to fish for down the road.....from what I have seen so far.....it is sad...real sad!!!... and I won't encourage organisations with poor managing control next year for sure....I believe mandatory release boats would be a good thing to start out with in all bass tournament events and oxygen given to tanks out of the water.

Now RJ..out of those 322 basses released....how many will survive you think?...Like you said Renegade might have what it takes to operate..but what about the others..who is doing something about this??What exactly is going on here all over the place...322 X ???...and basses left on their own at the beach launch... should we be concern about the rest of it all...instead of saying that all is good with Renegade.
Thanks for doing your share 444 :o

On the bright side of things... I fished a lake shortly(couple days) after they had released bass from a tournament and caught a healthy 3 pounder off a nearby dock. Could tell he was a tourny fish as he had a small hole in his lower jaw from the culling system.

Wow, great post. Some very passionate arguments from all sides (more than 2 here)!!! I am a recreational angler. I’m usually fishing from the dock or my 12’ tinny with my kids.

I too shared some of the concerns about bass tournaments that I’ve read here. However, this thread has been very educational and my views have changed.

I think the common theme seems to be “fishing kills fish”. This is true. However, fish are a renewable resource which if properly managed will be sustainable. Responsible anglers and angling organizations do everything they can to protect the sport / pastime they love. They follow the rules (trouney rules, regs, good practices, etc). I would bet that most contributing members on this forum fall into this category. There will always be cheats and poachers. Sad but true.

I mostly fish the Kawarthas (FMZ 17). Most of these lakes have several large bass tournaments on them each year. Not to mention huge fishing pressure from recreational anglers (Rice and Scugog being the worst).

During the recent discussions on Zone 17 reg changes I read a lot of documents on the health of the lakes over the last several decades (since 1978). A quick summary of the fish population in the zone is as follows:

Bass: Slight increase
Musky: Unchanged
Pumkinseed: Slight Decline
Bluegill: Increasing
Perch: Unchanged
Crappie: Huge increase
Walleye: Decreasing (especially Rice and Scugog)

Bottom line, bass fishing (professional and amateur) has not hurt the population of bass in these lakes. In fact most species are doing OK.

The only species that has declined has been the walleye and pumpkinseeds (mainly on Rice). This is due to several factors, a major one being over harvesting by angles. Recreational anglers not tournament anglers.

Thanks for the great read!
