I love fishing!

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I love fishing!

Post by Hookup »

No, seriously... I do..fly fishing, worms and bobbers, bait casting, flippn and pitching. I love it all...

Too many posts on the negative.

What does fishing mean to you?

To me, it means excitement and relaxation... Family and friends...
It's anticipation and adrenaline with strategic calculation...

I just love it!

So what does fishing mean to you?

It's the one thing that lets me completely detach from what is going on elsewhere in life.

I fished the same 5 lakes for 30 years and just recently started to branch out. I know those lakes like the back of my hand, but catching fish in a place you've never been before I am discovering is a unique excitement on it's own.

Good thread. I hope it will not die out quickly. We can keep it alive by starting a fight here :-)

I wrote in another post what I like about fishing, and someone said what I describe was camping not fishing :-) Well, I guess I like it whatever it is called. I like to take my family out to a nice place and fish and relax.

I think for me, a easier question might be...is there anything I don`t like about fishing.
I keep a journal of everytime I go fishing, whether I catch anything or not. I am lucky enough to live in a area were I am able to get out 180-200 times a year to wet a line. Might not always be a full day but a outing is a outing.
What I enjoy about fishing is the research of every outing, the tying of lines the night before, the waking up early excited everytime like a child on Xmas, the drive threw sometimes extreme conditions, arriving at the lake or launch chatting with other fisherman, taking off in the boat in total darkness watching the wake in the back, setting out the lines running different set-ups, waiting for the bite and finally a hook-up not knowing what is at the other end, the catch, sometimes the release (unless the fish is invited for supper) the day with friends or family, the drive home discussing the day of what went wrong or right and how to better it, the clean up of the boat and going to sleep at night thinking what a fulfilling day it was and can`t wait to do it again hopefully tomorrow!
ICE FISHING...Nothing better to make you feel alive, waking up at 4am looking outside to see a huge snowstorm and you know...nobody will be out today. Getting that phone call from your friend at 4;10am, not cancelling but calling to say he is just as pumped. Driving though snow where you can barely see though the window`s, arriving in the middle of the woods knowing the lake is in the bush somewhere, walking though the bush in the dark, snow and the elements. Arriving to nothing but solitude and the peace of the outdoors. Setting up lines trying to find out the bite, and finally after all your efford`s catching a fish.
Not to much I don`t like about fishing. We all have trying days at it and at time things can be frustrating but I do believe it adds a better quality of life to a person soaking in the outdoors. I can only be lucky enough to pass this love onto my Son.
Live, eat, sleep, fish and fishing!

There are so many things I love about fishing. It can combine all of my loves in life....or it cannot.

Being out on the water in a boat or simply casting from shore. The sights, smells, sounds of nature. Just being outside away from it all.

I can bring a friend, meet new people, or go out myself depending on how my mood suits me. If I want to be alone with my thoughts or shut my mind of completely I can.

Every now and then I'll have a relaxing shore beer

The smell of a brand new lure, the taught line and impending surge of adrenaline from a strike. The constant struggle to learn more, try new things, find new places and see new things.

All those things, either by themselves or combined in whichever way, those are the things I love about fishing.

Amoung many more

A much easier question.

I'm a fairweather ice fisherman but between ice out and ice in, you can usually find me in my float tube fly rod in hand or on the bassboat tossing something big and heavy.

The thing I don't like about fishing? Kicking a 3 month old $300 rod into the Ottawa River after slipping on a hookset. Now looking for some rod floats. That one hurt.

I think you just helped me narrow it down... It's just being somewhere where you're experiencing the surrounding environment. You're living it, all of your senses are immersed in it. You see the forest/water/animals, you handle the fish, you smell the slime, you hear the drag...

The single best part of fishing is the tug on the line... and the unmistakable headshake.... I dream about that $hit. Especially at work.

I have frigg'n woken myself up setting the hook on fish in a dream... Now that's frustration... Hooking into an 8+ largie only to wake up violently and slowly realize you are not on a boat.... ARGH...

It's in the blood.

Fishing to me is about many things... each in it's own time & place
  • Family- Getting out, together enjoying a pastime that we all love.
Solitude- Early morning watching the sun rise through the mist, alone with the beauty of nature.
Comraderie- Out with new and old friends, having a good time.
Peace- The still of an evening or early morning, esp April & October
Learning- Each year I learn new techniques and when to do what and why.
Nostalgia- Fishing w/ my kids like I used to with my dad.
Challenge- Looking for that elusive lunker that you just know is there.
Vindication- Applying what I have learned over the years and landing some decent fish as a result.
Science- What is each species feeding on and when, what to throw.
Humility- Some days the finny tribe don't cooperate, in spite of what has been learned.
    Adrenalin Rush- Got a good'un!!
Come to think of it, I could apply the same list to why I enjoy Hunting :D

Agree with you 100%! But I must say... that if this was a different board with a different character... I might redo this list as it reminds me of the reasons I liked being single in Montreal...

But this board has a higher standard than my usual type of humor could ascribe to!

I fish nearly every day, if only for an hour on my lunch break. Nothing breaks up the day better than a little stress free action on a shore somewhere. To me, it's a place I can go where I can get my mind at ease.
Fishing is a heritage we need to teach. Take a kid fishing! And take me too while you're at it.

Fishing = Peace of Mind

Fishing = A chance to improve, develop and branch out my angling skills

Fishing = A connection to my past, my childhood, my father, my family

Fishing = Time spent passing on that connection to my own kids

Fishing = An awareness and appreciation of nature in surround sound

Fishing = Time to just breathe free and to BE

Nice thread!

W.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me fishing when I was a kid.
