1. What method or calculations have been completed by muskie fishing groups or the MNR to determine how many muskie are in the Ottawa River and what is the right number for a healthy sustainable population? How many acres of muskie habitat is there between Chats Falls and Rockland?
2. How is fishing pressure regulated on any body of water during an open season?
3. Explain how Muskie club events do not put a focused pressure on a particular area?
I'll awnser a few of these
1. Muskie Canada angler log data..ie..how many hours of effort to catch one...over years it can become apparent if a population is in decline or incline. As far as how many make up a healthy population...Well that's a tough one but generally if the fish being caught are healthy specimens, that's a foot in the right direction. The next one I catch I'll ask how the rest of it's family are doing...There is millions of cubic feet between Chats falls and Rockland...a few million mor between Rockland and Carillion
2. It isnt...however catch limits and size limits are the safe gaurds in effect.
3. They do!! But....not for cash..at least not Muskies Canada events..just bragging rights adn to raise some cash, that in one way shape or form directy back to the fishery.

I think this post has gotten a little bit personal for my liking ...
The last thing I'll say on this matter because I am big on conservation, catch and release, etc ... is that lets all be proactive and manage fish and habitat closely ... ourselves ... don't rely on the government to keep track of the health of the fishery no matter what species ... we did that in Atlantic Canada and look what happened to the cod fishery .. i recall my uncle just a year or two before they shut it down saying (he fished on draggers for years) ... "there's nothing wrong with the cod .. if there was the scientists in ottawa would let us know" ...
Organizations like Muskie Canada to me are the answer ... strong, vocal and keeping a close eye on things ...
I'm out !!!

Good discussion boys/girls, let's avoid cheap shots...Relic wrote:lets say you catch a legal fish...it dies....what do you do??? Legally you can not keep it...legally you can not waste it???
MLR, well done, your 2nd post was much tamer. Big boy pants? lol.
So what DOES someone with Conservation licence do in this situation?
E
this is my opinion, and not intended to upset anyone. if you have a conservation license you should only fish the species that your license would allow you to keep. myself personally never keep my limit of any fish but by buying the sport license i like to feel that i am somehow contributing a little bit more to our fisheries. i know that realistically the money probably just lines the bureaucratic pockets, but my intent is an honest one, albeit some would feel an naive one.lapointeric wrote:Good discussion boys/girls, let's avoid cheap shots...Relic wrote:lets say you catch a legal fish...it dies....what do you do??? In regards to #1 Thanks, I know understand that there is very little to no current science applied to the overall condition of the muskie fisherie in Eastern Ontario but atleast steps are being taken to start the long process.Good on the Muskie groups to gather and provide data to the MNR in a format that they can work with. It's a start.
In regards to #2 Thanks for reminding that catch limits and size limits regulate the pressure applied and that its ok for multiple boats to target the same species in the same area for a weekend. I don't think anyone ever planned on hitting the same spot for the entire open season. Maybe the regulations needs to be improved to eliminate organized group outings that specifically target muskie?
In regards to #3 Did the, and I quote from the flyer on the Ottawa Chapter website "Our prize table has many fantastic prizes" that were awarded at the Muskies Canada Ottawa Chapter get together in Rockland have any dollar value? Or do your valued sponsors give you many worthless fantastic prizes? Also the suggestion of a small entry fee with 100% payout came from one of your Muskie Canada members. Unfortunately this still leaves me not understanding how card carrying members participating in such events but also condemn them at the same time.
thanks again for enlightening me on the data collecting efforts, I didn't know how it was being done or collected as there is very little info available from the MNR at this time in regards to Eastern Ontario .

it's guys ( yes you can insert guides here as I know of 2 that do that ) pounding the same spots day in and day out that destroy a fishery. As well as pounding the fish just off the spawn.
Is that the same guide that you were convicted of trying to hire a hitman to break his legs?
Is it true you have been banned from muskies canada for life over this?

Did I say anything about MCI?
Involve MCI in any way?
Quote or make reference to MCI?
Do I have MCI in my signature?
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do fish other species and believe it or not have a freekin life outside MCI that doesn't have to ride it's coat tails........

This whole fkn mistake was an effort to get to know some FH members outside of any club or organization and get them involved in what might be a fun.....knowledgable .....memorable day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With possibly some funds involved for incentive or for charity.
The pm with the meeting I sent you was so you could get info first hand without all the political/childish BS from a select few on FH.......
Last fkn time I try this for FH

JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Analize this!

Nice first post diggler!!!diggler wrote:Trophymuskie wrote:

I don't have the time or energy for bs like this.

1. The angler log programm has been in effect since the inception of Muskies Canada 32 years ago. There is a lot more science that has been completed is being. I just don't have the time to find it all for you. The log program is the one thing that every single member can partake in.
2. OMG - There is spots on every body of water the every one knows about, the get the crapped fished out of them all year. You really think one 8 hour day is going to make a difference??? I was at one of said spots last night...along with a couple other boats...still caught a nice muskie...As any fisherman knows there is more to it than just being in the right spot....conditions, time, presentation etc...
3. I Won't speak for Matt other than to say his intentions are good...as they always are..
The prizes...some are donated some are not..it doesn't matter...it's a raffle you buy tickets you might win a prize.....every penny of that raffle money goes back into the fishery in one way shape or form.
Alot of people should look in the mirror and say " What have I done to give back to the fishery" is the awnser is nothing....well, shame on you.

I agree, but I'm sure people have caught muskie incidentally while fishin' for other species.
Is there really no 1 certain thing you should do if you a guy with a 'C' licence hooks into a muskie, and it's DOA.
E
p.s. totally ignoring the comments by a member who created a new profile to post something ridiculous.
