Am I missing something ???

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Am I missing something ???

Post by dead_weight »

OK i'm new here but not new to fishing sites ... I've seen a few posts and threads from quite a few disgruntled people complaining about how the site has gone downhill, people just slam others, etc, etc. ... in essence "it's not what it once was" ... I can't comment on how it once was but as a new person it's very valuable to me ...

glance through the threads in the first few pages ... people asking questions about what the fishing is like on certain lakes ... people asking what lures and baits work best ... people posting reports and pics from an outing including what lure worked and what didn't ... I might be wrong but isn't that what people expect on a fishing site ???

For me if I wanted to go out fishing tomorrow all I have to do is check this site and I can pick a thread about a certain lake and know if it's worth going there, what to use, is anyone catching fish there this year .. heck even where to launch my boat !!

All I can say is this site delivers what I look for ... advice on where and how to catch fish ... period.

Hence this being a fishing forum and not a Soap opera forum. I agree. I like to think of myself as one of the regulars on here and when I can I post a report with some info in it for others to use and also try to help out when they have questions but I am also one of the first to throw a joke or jab in at someone I concider a friend even if I have never met them before and only really chatted on here.

One of my first years here I got into it with one guy about a brown trout lake. We had our blows and I would like to think we understand each other ( most of the time ) and if the opportunity ever came up I would like to think we could fish in the same boat and maybe only come out with a black eye each

The problem with the internet is even with emoticons people read into a post what they want. I have had some pretty good discussions over the years and have scratched my head on a few comments but that is what it is. We need to make sure we view this as what it is a forum of people with every opinion imaginable and understand that opinions are like hemmroids...sooner or later every bum has one 8)

Right on - I agree - this site is still good.
There are people who focus on the neg, but the pos outweigh's the neg by a large margin.

Positives...
I have met at least 10 people via Fish-Hawk who are now good friends. Without FH, would have never met them, fished with or learned from them.

The classifieds - look at the Minn-Kota Big Jim just posted. Less than 1/2 retail. Posted today. Great deal for someone who needs one!

Look at how Moonshine just this week took Hollywood out to catch his first Lake trout. Awesome!!

Look at Chevy's first Musky - and the comments. Super!!

Tomorrow is the GTG and derby on Mississippi lake. Organized by Craig and RJ, both giving of their own time. Does it get any better than that?

Cheers

Hey Pete
My first fishing report ever on this site was commented on by you - asking if the fish was OOS. (it wasn't)

I had forgot about it, but since you mention the black eyes, now I remember it... anytime you want to we'll go fishing, let's go and we'll settle the score...

I actually got my first couple trout using tips from the guys/gals here. I also feel less noobey with some of the fishing terms as well thanks to feeling open to ask questions.

Thanks!

Nice post!!
I agree with you... by in large...

There are some people that will post a "Congratulations" but will be passive aggressive in their tone... They will criticize and debase the whole thing by calling into question the integrity, motivation and/or morality of the person who is posting their fishing report.

Some see helping, or trying to help people as a cardinal sin. Posting maps... I have been criticized for this on MANY occasions. Helping someone find a launch. Helping someone find a place to take their kids out fishing... been attacked for all these things on this site.

You just need to ignore those people. They are buffoons and everybody knows it. They will end up with allies from time to time who think in the same selfish, myopic and frightened way... they will spam the forum in a drunken stupor... but then they go away.

It is a small minority. They are the ones that pretend to be a part of this community but do nothing more than to try and spread their backwards thinking and find other miserable SOBs to consume their wretched up view of the world.

You will get to the point where you will recognize the malcontents.. and skip over their posts.

You have the right attitude my good man... don't loose it...

I"ve said it before... but compared to other sites, this one has much more of a local flavour, and is only spoiled by a FEW rotten apples. Other message boards are just 100% attack all the time.

Love this site.

Remember that some people live behind their keyboards, it's not a majority but they exist. All they have is the "virtual" world. Sorta speak...

A while back I was on car forums alot and many people who "smacked" the most or talked the most trash, would not say a word when you met them!

I created a forum (car stuff) once and I realised quickly that people get emotionally attached to the forum, which to me is hard to understand but I guess to them it's more than a ressources. I would get PM's "That person told me this" and blah blah blah....it was a very eye opening experience.

The virtualization as a lot of advatages, talk, meet with people you would have never had the chance to talk and meet otherwise. Learning is so much easier than it was before...but it also has disadvantages, people skills are degrating, it's easier to SMS, Email or PM then calling...So people have a strange approch now...

Many of the people that do major complaints, on this forum, would have a very different choice of words if they would be sitting in a room with every member of this forum.

If everyone gives a little and takes a little the site will be in good shape.

live and let live!

You really have to take anything for what it's worth on here....There are a ton of helpful folks out there who will go out of their way to help you. But like what was said before, there are some people who are just plain $hit disturbers.

I'm not going to go buy $5,000 in lottery tickets because someone on here gave me the "winning numbers", but if I ask for advice on something fishing related, this is the place to go.

I may not comment on some peoples stories or reports ect ect, but I do read alot of them and enjoy doing so. And I love seeing other peoples fish (or lack of fish cause we have all been there) in pictures and words.

A good debate is fine too, alot of times you can learn some extra info from them. It's when the attacks get personal that things get out of hand. And it is really easy to stay out of those things...just don't reply. Some people on here (or any forum) are just trying to get attention by stirring the pot. Don't give them the satisfaction of a reply and they will soon find somewhere else to post.

Exactly ... I'm in the process of selling some land back where I grew up and one of the items at the top of my list is a boat ... i've been doing canoe, kayak, shore fishing, borrowing, renting at lodges, hitching a ride, etc. for long enough ... someone asked ... where are you gonna go fishing? For me it's simple ... i'll check out a few threads on this site, check the map and I'm gone ... if I have any additional questions I'll post them and I'm sure someone will fill in the blanks for me before I go.

If one of my fishing buddies decides he can't and I want some company ... I'll gladly post something here for an open seat or PM someone I've already fished with ... or go alone ... whatever.

I know one of my first trips to a remote lodge in Quebec for walleye ... both myself and my buddy didn't have a clue how to fish walleye ... he went onto a fishing site and people were only too happy to explain various techniques that worked for them ... in particular he learned how to bottom bounce for walleye ... this info meant he was pulling in stringers of walleye on the first day ... then he taught me. Without that site who knows how we would have done.

nuff said ...

Found it O4T....

Are lakers open right now. I know of only two lakes in this area open for lakers. Either way it was a nice one for sure. Now I really hate to start this but what do you do if you catch an OOS fish that is too injured to go back???

Yup guess I did in a round about way....Sorry for that but really I did say either way nice

Good question and something that has been needed to be addressed here for a while.
Speaking from a personal standpoint I can say that I echoed O4T statements to a large degree when I first joined FH.

If I may share with you without prejudice.

Over time I met new folks be it ice fishing or softwater fishing, shared info and got out with many of them. I went on "Adventure outings" with FH guys, donated to and participated in derbies to raise monies for various causes ,even dropped off food for those who did the work when I was not able to. I took out many guys Muskie fishing I had never met and you can still see evidence of that in many avatars on the forum.
I have posted many fish reports of all kinds, written information articles and even stopped guys on the water and given them tackle to better their chances. My kids loved to read posts and even paricipate in writing them with me about our family fishing, holiday adventures.
I have answered every request for info be it by pm or email or on the forum and had a lot of fun doing it and never asked for anything in return.

But during all that their was the negative posts from some expressing angst over certian personal beliefs, I watched some of the folks(friends) I made here get berated by people who thought they were low lifes because of menial details on how they fished, where they fished, when they fished, how they dressed, so they quit FH. Some of these were handeled well by the mods(Bobber) but then it got progressively worse. Guys taking it all too seriously pm and threaten others with violence. Then folks were getting critizied because of what they fish and who they know and soon they stop posting all together except for the odd "congratulations" to someone who achieved a milestone or did something good for someone else.
Watching this site go from a place you feel welcome , look forward to checking in to see how so and so is doing, whats been caught by who, and reading all the positive reports to a thread high jacking, verbally abusive, insult laden pornographic free for all is tough without reacting and trying to rid it of the negative.
I know there are some really good folks here at FH and lots of great info to be had and watching some of the guys/gals post amazing report shows there is still good things for fh..F24/7, BA,TMH,AF/MB/JH are just a few examples.
The mods just need to have a zero tolerence approach and seeing Muskie4L's post is a breath of fresh air.

Cheers
