Prop position on a canoe and maximum thrust

For those of you with a canoe and trolling motor, it seems to me that you get the best bang for your charge by putting the prop as high as it can go in the water without splashing. In that position the majority of the prop would not be below the bottom of the canoe.
...anything to bend the rod
