My son's 1st Gar

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

My son's 1st Gar

Post by Jimmy_1 »

Well,

Finally it just so happened on our holidays that the weather gods were nice!
Hot, humid day, no wind and calm water = PERFECT night for gar!

The action was slow at 1st but surely, as always...they came in and we all went 4/4!

Here is my little lad with his 1st and at 38"! He followed instructions like a pro and had no qualms handling it for pics!

1911

Needless to say it made his YEAR! I told him the patience was well worth it!!!!

Great catch! What was the magic recipe?
This year I spent most of my money on beer, women and fishing...the rest I wasted.

Awesome catch for your son. He sure is a courageous little guy for handling that beast.

Also,

I tried to catch my first gar since 2008 with NO luck!

Tried EVERYTHING!!!!

Now I won't give spots out (obviously) and if you do get into them its an art just to get a hook set (get ready to lose A LOT of them at 1st).....

But here is my tidbit benefit of 5 years worth of asking, trying and scanning the NET....

I learnt this technique from a guide in Florida who has used it his whole life...funnily some good friends of mine were using this technique also. Neither of which care if I divulge how its done. (SO I asked 1st!)....

Its a blast, its fun and some nights its darn right frustrating as if conditions ain't 100% forget it! (I did get 1 swipe in 5 hours on a cold night...won't do that again)

We were just VERY happy that the wee lad finally got one! Its tough for him and I to get out (gotta balance out the time doing other family things, his sister and step-sister HATE fishing, and my significant other is 6 months pregnant so not really in the most mobile shape to jump rocky shores to hunt gar).

He got one, made his year and he wanted me to share it with the FH community....

I am VERY proud of him and thank my buddies for grabbing the fish and unhooking it so I could take pics and walk him through holding it (my adrenaline was spiked too lol)

I put a frozen minnow 8 inches under a bobber and got my first gar tonight! Thanks for the great info!
