Best Ottawa River Musky lures/colors

Post by rex.stpierre »

Hey guys,

I'm looking into spending some money after my girlfriend bought me an 8'6 musky rod for our anniversary.

What are your top three lures to use for musky on the Ottawa. I'm looking for lure type and color.

I already have blue and white 6 ounce bulldawgs, one black and red 12 inch bucktail, one green and white top water with tinsel, two mepps giant killers, one white and red, the other red and black

I have a couple of shad colored 6.5 ounce storm thundersticks, they go down to 17 feet. That is kind of deep for casting in weedy bays.

I'm missing a shallow raider...and some chartreuse ... I think...

Lure and color guys, lure and color

Cheers!

You have enough to get you a good start... go fishing not shopping. Good 80 lb floro leader helps... saw someone from Shawville selling them on Kijiji they look pretty sweet and will help you to not lose your favorite lure to some toothy critter.
That old Ottawa river is a messy old muddy piece of water to work and those lazy big fish need to see that lure... think flashy florescent colors... probably adding a rattle too would not hurt. Troll the drop-offs with the deeper running stuff you got. River and creek mouths produce well. Good luck!

I was out for musky on the Ottawa last Saturday. Much to my horror I realized that I had left my box of favorite big spinner baits at home.......so I put on a giant spinner bait that had two blades, one silver and one brass............AND NO FEATHERS OR HAIR LEFT ON THE HOOKS..(THUS NO COLOUR). I caught a 42" and 36" within half an hour on the hairless/colourless spinner......AM JUST SAYIN. I put a lot of stock in the idea that vibration is 90% of the battle. That being said, I won't forget my favorites again since it doesn't feel right trolling a "naked" spinner bait........

Tight lines.....Ted

I make my own 80lbs fluoro leaders and i match it with 65lbs braid. I also tie my own bucktail treble hooks, so i can switch out colors..

The large williams wobbler spoon, gold colour works wonders when the water clarity improves in Oct/Nov. It is an lure that can get fish to hit if they are under pressure from the larger, more common lures.
