Salmon River NY Advice

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Salmon River NY Advice

Post by coolspiderdude »

Hi everyone,

A group of friends and I are heading to NY to fish the salmon river in a few weeks and I wanted to ask for some advice. It appears that we would be mainly targetting Chinooks, but coho and steelhead could also be in the river at the same time.

I have fished salmon rivers on the west coast a lot (northern BC as well as combat fishing on the fraser river). I'm wondering what to expect. Is it combat fishing conditions, shoulder to shoulder with tons of snaggers? Is it possible to find quiet spots (I would rather have a good experience and not catch any fish, than witness some of the garbage that I saw out west). Any advice and guidance on techniques, spots (don't need to give away a honey holes, unless you want to PM me :-))

thanks in advance and tight lines to all!

Haven't been states side for any salmon runs but I did fish the Ontario side for some steelies this year. If the NY side is anything like here expect there to be a lot of people. Saw a bunch of snaggers too. It was early season when we were there though so all the anglers were concentrated on the stretches that were open at the time. Like I said though never been states side so could be completly different. Either way good luck and have fun!

I was just there last week!

Where are you staying?

The Holiday Inn Express in Watertown (across the 81 from Gander) was VERY helpful in tips etc.
Also, there is a bait shop just over the border and they too can provide you a ton of advice.

Thanks!

While I haven't been, guys that I fish Ganaraska with have, and prefer the Ganny to Pulaski.
Less combat/frustrations.... lots of combat stories.
With any of these places, there are always snaggers/combat.
Going during the week helps.

Which Salmon River in NY. There is the Salmon River in Pulasky to Altmar, and then there is the Salmon River near Malone.

Would you be fly-fishing (even centerpin) or bait casting?

Two nice sources of information for the Pulaski area.

When you get there the fish will be spread throughout the river and all access points will be crowded. However, do some walking from those access point and you will find some water to yourself. Mitch

Be sure you familiarize yourself with the regs, as the Salmon R. has special regulations with respect to what what sit-ups are legal and what are not. Unlike ON, the NY DEC actively enforces their regulations.

A good bud that I just talked to tonight was telling me about his recent Chinook adventure, on the Ontario side. Numerous salmon over 20 lb, including 3 fresh silvers. The quality of the meat isn't even worth keeping for the table, it's all about taming that freight train that just picked up your sac. He's going back soon for another shot at it, so I asked him to keep me one for bear bait. :)
Spidydood I have some good stuff for ya bud.
The guys had No prob with crowds at all. How can that be you ask lol ? They fished from 10 pm till 4 am. That was the key. Fish the night time.
They bottom fished off shore, sitting in a lawn chair in a calm shallow section of the river, with home made sacks. Doesn't get much simpler, and then the action goes from mellow to race in seconds, and you hang on for the ride and hope you don't run out of line.
Last piece of advice I can impart, is to use a baitcasting outfit. No line twist when fighting fish, or when casting. I warned Danny about it ahead of time, and sure enough he had to strip his spinning reel of line and respool at night.

Have fun on your adventure. Cheers

thanks gang! its much appreciated!

yes, definately hoping to be able to wade and find a quiet spot. Smitty, definately a baitcaster! I have my steelhead outfit from BC, so I that will be my primary with a smaller set up, just in case.

Did not know you could fish at night? I'm recent arrival from BC and there it was 1 hour before / after sunrise/sunset regs. Will have to look into that!

Ahh the old bar fishing technique is certainly a nice way to go. we used to fish the skeena in northern BC with a very large pyramid weight, spin n glo and egg sacs..but that was also when I could catch enough coho to make my own sacs. May have to stick with jensen eggs and wool this trip!

No idea where we are staying as another guy is taking care of that. He said "close to the big mall in watertown?"

As Todd suggested, if you are going to the SR become familiar with their rules, as you cannot fish between sunset and sunrise.

just to update this.well actually the final update will hopefully include some pix etc. as we are heading out this weekend. There was some confusion about the fishing at dark question and one of my buddies told me that they always fish till way past sunset when they go there. So I did some research and I guess everyone was right....kinda.

Lake Ontario Tributary Seasonal Fishing Regulations
Fishing Hours
Fishing from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise is prohibited except in the Black River (Jefferson County) from Lake Ontario upstream to the Route 180 bridge in Dexter, where fishing is permitted at all times.

We are heading to Dexter (which is where they have always gone) so I guess at that spot, you can fish 24/7, other spots, the "regular" rules apply.

tighlines to all and next update will be with me holding a huge 35 lb silver bullet....or a 355ml silver bullet :-)

My opinion.... the Ganaraska has absolutely nothing on the Salmon River. The Ganny is like shooting a fish in a barrel with limited space and lots of posted land where anglers do a lot of leading and lifting. The Salmon is big river with plenty of space and public access. It can be intimidating especially if you don't have the right footwear. During the early Chinook run it can be crowded around the bridges and access points but stretch your legs a little and you can find plenty of water all to yourself. As the season progresses the crowds thin out. Plus there are many creeks from Sacketts Harbour all the way down to Oswego that have runs of a fish and plenty of public land.

Hey gang, just wanted to post an update on this thread.

We went, we fished, we caught!

So we went out and fished the river in Dexter NY, most of the time either under the bridge or below it. It's an interesting spot as you can fish after dark if you are downstream of the bridge. We fished hard for 10 hours during the day on day 1 and no one got a bite, nada, nyet, nothing. Not a big crowd and about 4-5 boats. People trying very different techniques from chucking spoons, to floating roe or wool to very blatant attempts at snagging (out in BC we called it floosing). Like I said, nothing during the day, despite fish in the river and some splashing and jumping (we seemed to be about 2 weeks early, I betcha it's full of fish right now).

Evening was a whole other story, we switched to sliding egg weights and single hooks with roe bags and the action picked up. Many fish on, several landed over the course of each evening and we fished until 2-3am.

I caught and landed a very nice, fresh doe about 22-25 lbs, if the picture upload works, you will see it. My buddy caught and landed one in excess of 35lbs, but it was pretty dark and we released it. It was a lot of fun and not the crowds and combat fishing I was expecting. I know many believe that salmon stop feeding when they enter rivers, but this simply cannot be true. Growing up in Northern BC we would fish the Skeena system using a very similar bar fishing technique with a 3 way swivel, heavy pyramid weight and roe. I refuse to believe that you snag fish after fish using a stationary system like that, which is what we were doing. Toss it about 25 yards out, tighten the line, set it on a rod holder, light cigar and wait. Anyway all in all it was a good experience, I will be sure to go next year (more cold weather gear, better headlamp, waterproof camera, chair, more cigars and the bottle of marnier was gone in 20 minutes :-))

thanks to all for the great advice and tips.

Tight lines!

Glad you had a good trip spidey. To post pics I've found the easiest way is to upload the pic to photobucket. Then left click on the IMG [url=http...] box to copy. Then paste it in your post. Lets see some pics lol. Cheers
