Cabelas in Ottawa! It's happening
Cabelas in Ottawa! It's happening
Nothing official announced yet but I have it from a solid source that the largest one in Canada will be opening in 2015 in Kanata, out by the CT Center. Apparently the land has been purchased. Get your wallets ready guys.
Seriously though, this will be quite hard on all of our local vendors, small and large. It's hard to beat the buying power of a corp like Cabelas. Even if our local shops can match prices, they will never be able to match the selection available and the experience of visiting a store like that.
For the consumer of outdoor products this will be great, as competition should lower prices. For the small shops, I think harder times might be coming. That's a shame, but I know I will still try and give local business my coin if I can.
Cheers

Very interesting.
Re: Cabelas in Ottawa! It's happening
I live in Kanata, this is not good news for my budget, LOL!!!!
Seriously though, this is good news if true. I really do like Sail as well though and I like it as much (possibly more?) for the clothing and other stuff as I do for fishing gear. I also find that they have great sales at times and overall I think their prices are pretty good. I'd probably shop at both.

well Good news i suppose..
but i will continue to spend my money at bait casters and Bennett's.... I'm lucky and live right in between the both of them. I have had nothing but great service and enjoy that small town type feel when shopping there. I will continue to support both of these stores, even if it costs a bit more.

Re: Cabelas in Ottawa! It's happening
Cabelas is a great store, make no mistake, but their better purchasing power is offset by the HUGE overhead they must carry to keep a store that size open. I would wager that my prices, and those of the other sponsors of this board would be very close to what they can offer. Also, being a much (MUCH) smaller store I can react to new items or trends that are available in a matter of days rather than months. I expect that the results in my store will be much the same as when Sail opened in the Trainyards. I had a 1 month dip in sales as everyone checked out the new guys in town, then my sales actually went up and remained up as I kept my regular customers as well as got some of the spinoff from the new people attracted to Sail. At the same time Sail did well too.
I'm sure Cabelas will do a fine job, and I'm just as sure that Paddletales will be fine too.

Have you even been at Paddletales? Ever?
Seems like you're almost taking a shot at our local smaller knowledgeable stores!
I'd rather go at Ed's and be called by my name then go at Cabelas and be treated as a number....

I'd recheck your source.
Ask yourself why a store would ever consider coming to Ottawa before trying the GTA first?
Don't count on er boys.

When Ed figures a way to charge for hooksets (hooksets are free) I'll stop buying from him.TheMaverick wrote:smitty55 wrote:

If you're gonna be stupid, you'd better be tough.
Re: Cabelas in Ottawa! It's happening
I am betting that ice fishing will be banned on 31 Mile Lake before Cabelas opens in Ottawa.

I wonder if both predictions came from the same solid source.MLR wrote:I am betting that ice fishing will be banned on 31 Mile Lake before Cabelas opens in Ottawa.

He said Kanata... not Ottawa. Are you giving odds?

Never been to Winchester... but have ordered from there before.
Baitcasters, Bennetts, Bits & Baits, Le Barons, BassPro and probably other local and non-local bait and tackle shops that start with the letter B have all had some of my business. Sail, Gagnons, JB's, Cabelas, and a few other Stateside shops have all got some too. Variety is a great thing to have, and it'd be cool having a Cabelas anywhere this side of Ontario, especially Ottawa. Sometimes an extra two bucks on the shelf at the local shop though, beats the $20 in gas to head into the city.

Eugene Melnyk will open a Casino in Kanata before Cabelas will open a Superstore
There will be an influx of Great Grey Owls in the winter of 2017
