port hope salmon run

So me and a pal are going to port hope for the salmon run.its a annual fishing trip.normally we use roe.but we cannot find any in ottawa.does anyone know anywhere we can buy any in the ottawa, kingston, port hope area.

Also we are not the kinda dicks who just gut them take the eggs and ditch the fish.

This is a disgusting trend in port hope.all our fish are C.P.R(catch picture release)

good on you for the CPR but if Im not mistaken a good number of those fish are swimming their last swim anyway so why not keep one for a feast. As for gutting them for the roe that is wrong and the people who do that should be gutted as well... Now I know down the road from the hotel off the highway in Port Hope there is a spot my dad and I used to go to get roe but that was many years ago. Also there was another spot near Shelter valley but again many years ago. Good luck finding some but I don't think it will be from around here. google Elliott's bait shop in Port hope and give them a call they should know where to get some.

I think you can get some at canadian tire in cobourg...im not 100% sure..kingston canadian tire to check there..

There is a bait shop on the docks at lake ontario they sell roe all made up for you. I am headed there tomorrow myself and have enquired about it. 125 mill st south port hope is there address headed there friday night pm me if your interested in meeting up saturday and fishing and shooting the breeze. I went ONCE. It was like fishing in downtown Pittsburgh in an open sewer. DIRTY does not begin to describe it. The sheer number of people that are there is enough to give you agoraphobia.

Not to shake the cage on a dead subject, but knowing my stance on the water quality of the Ottawa downstream from Quyon, I would rather eat a catfish out of Rockland than to even get splashed by the water out of the Ganaraska River!!.

Better off taking a charter and getting one IN the lake!

Now I have not been to Port Hope in a few years but this is something I never noticed was the dirty water etc. Maybe dad and I were further up stream where the river was nice and crystal clean and we competed against maybe 3-4 other fisherman. Yes there are spots that get clogged up but come on guys and be adventerous and explore the streams. There are more than one coming up out of the lake and I remember some very beautiful quite pools we spent many an hour on fishing. As for the fish again any fish we kept did not seem to bad. We usually kept the smaller of them though and if they were hook nosed we just released them.

I went with some friends last year (we fished downstream of the bridge from Dexter. Unsure if this the same area you are going to. We fished below and down from the river as you can fish there after dark and there were no crowds or anyone in sight. We did very well with everyone hooking many and keeping one each. Fish were clean and fresh from the lake which is only a few Km's away. We used roe and got it from both Dicks sports and Gander mountain (both had them), used an egg weight and casted out 15-20 meters and essentially let it just sit with a glow stick on the tip of the rod. This was quite interesting to me as inevitable with this type of fishing the conversation turns to snagging (or flossing as we called it on the west coast), however when we are simply casting and letting it sit there, then the fish that are brought in are fair hooked (corner of mouth etc., not in a fin or gill) then that kinda shoots the whole "salmon dont feed when they enter the rivers" theory. Anyway, I likely have now re-opened the can of worms on that (sorry). PS. there are sections that you can pay an xtra fee to fish and have no crowds, something to consider. For me, it is simply what it is, some days I float on a pristime lake with my fly rod and no one else, other times its shoulder to should combat fishing, both have their draws.

Thanks everyone.ill try the few locations mentioned for roe.
Also I am fully aware these fish are going to spawn out and die.
And yes these fish are dirty and some people eat them.I am not one of those individuals. I only C.R.P these fish.
but what I have seen in the past is gutted fish tossed to the side.if ur not going to eat them put them back let them spawn off and die naturally.if all u want is the roe but it from a store.thats my opinion atleast.

I agree spence but if your reason for not eating them is the pollution I'm sure in the short time they are in the streams and rivers they do not increase their levels of mercury or lead etc to in-edible levels. I could be wrong on that and if there is a study etc that says different then I may change things up.

To each their own, for sure. Just my experience was such that I don't care if the fish came from Candy Land covered in bacon... pulling them out of what looked to me like an open industrial sewer (Where we fished in town near the mouth of the river) kinda turns me right off.

If you are just looking for the pull on the line and a pic or two for your fishing album, it will do nicely!

There were salmon in the rivers in August, always is.
