Another day from shore

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Another day from shore

Post by SMITZGOTTHIS »

A buddy and I decided to take another trip up to cassleman to do a day of shore fishing. My buddy is a long time lover of fishing, but is still trying to experience the types of different species of fish and knowing the importance on why you try not to catch OOS fish. We started the day at the local boat launch, where we had nothing but great weather, but could not seem to hook into anything. We then went down to my local sweet spot, there we began to toss our spinners into the calm water.

Around 9:00 I hear a giant smack to look over at McNug jerking his rod with such fierce force, with a loud yell" I have a giant weed"! I continue to watch the tip of his line making my way over to see if he was actually snagged, at which point I see the head shake and the rod tip drop! I tell McNug to keep that tip up as now he is in for a fight, he battles this fish into deep cover as it continuously head shakes to get loose. The fish only a couple feet from shore, white belly in the air as if I was drinking all night I jumped into the water to assist him in landing a 9 pound walleye!!

I quickly removed the hook, and allowed McNug to take his picture, a giant smile a face a mother could only love. I then brought the fish back into the water, taking my time to release such a beautiful piece of gold to allow it to breed another day.

We went back to it, McNug still in disbelif on what just actually happened. I then continued to toss my spinnerbait into the river, when dragging my lure across the weeds for another cast; SMASH,Set the hook I go, the fight is on. A brief dive, with a few head kicks and I brought this beauty of a gator!

Pictures were taken, another successful morning had by both. I enjoy what the Ottawa area has to offer for shore fishing anglers, it goes to show (McNug now knows) that you do not always need a boat to get to those honey holes.

Hey Shawn, it clears up in the middle, I have never actually gotten a depth of the middle of the river, but I am sure there is a good drop. Thanks everyone else for the replies, have fun out there!
