Fishing Locations for Ottawa Area

Hi everybody, I am a new member of this site and a recent returnee to the sport of fishing. I have also converted my wife and she has become a real enthusiast and will drop a line at a moment's notice. Unfortunately, she uses a cane and cannot scramble over the rocks to get to some of the best fishing holes.
Would appreciate any advice on spots within driving distance of Ottawa where we could set up a lawnchair. On August 2 we drove to Cornwall and caught a couple of nice smallmouth in the St Lawrence at the entrance of the Long Sault Parkway.

Welcome to FH,

All of the locks along the Rideau have accessible docks. The Jock River landing (Jock River at the Rideau) is accessible. Just bring lots of bug spray. LOL As for areas upstream on the Ottawa, you may wish to contact Karack to see if he knows of any spots around Shirley's Bay that meet your needs.

Hey BT,

I fished AH Park earlier this spring. Caught a few nice channel cats and an eel (ugh) using worms and cut bait close to dusk. Was back there at the end of June and caught a nice smallmouth. There is a lot of shoreline to cover, especially when you remember that AH park meets up with Dick Bell Park where the Nepean Sailing club launch is. Most of the shore is made up of granite chunks - there seemed to be a number of people fishing, and it looks like smallmouth country - however, the days I was there, the water was quite murky and that broken rock sure is hard on tackle. Had to stop using jigs and switch to shallow cranks and spinners.

Hey golfer welcome aboard I can offer a few spots that arent rough terrain.

1st would be Bronson bridge,on the university side,good fish but picky aswell.

2nd would be Jock river landing,this time of year low water but will hold fish.

3rd,Long Island,or Blacks rapids locks,abundant fishing and picnic areas,but paid parking

4th,and a little far but good fishin,Rockland Launch area,same as above but no fee to park,also I live in the area and would be happy to show you what works.

I haven't paid to park at Black Rapids in 2 years. The Lock Masters are the ones that check the parking but the guys at Black Rapids are usually too busy to check. Besides, they're a good bunch, always willing to strike up a conversation.

grew up along the strstch at a. h. park and the rock was added to the bay back in the early 70's to build the park. The original shoreline was nearly 300 yards in from where it is now. Once you throw your bait out into the water the bottom is mostly sand, hence the murky water on a windy day. Definite good area for cats after dark. Large sandbars out from Stillwater(Corkstown) creek and Graham creeks will attract foraging walleye and bass when the wind blows in on them. Nice spots to set upon a lawn chair and set line for fish at dusk with livebait.

just wondering how to get to these places (Long Island, AH Park, Black Rapids...)... (from downtown). Haven't done much fishing as of yet in and around town (other than the Ottawa River... around Parkdale...)... but should be hitting Bronson soon... and would like to get to these two other places...
I also went to Petrie one time... but was pretty lost in terms of where to try and all we caught was one <12" smb.
Hoping the urban fishing project will answer these questions, but in the meantime... i want to get out there!

Black Rapids is off of Prince Of Wales Dr. (old #16) just south of Hunt Club Rd. (just on the left after you pass the condominiums.) While there is a pay-and-display parking meter, I've never been ticketed.

Long Island is pretty much in Manotick. I would park at the locks the first time, at least till you figure out where you want to fish. There is parking on the other side of the river if you fish the back channel. As for getting to the locks, just take Riverside South. It eventually turns into River Rd. after Hunt Club. Turn right on Nicholls Island Rd. (sign for Long Island Locks as well). If you get to the Tim's in Manotick you've gone too far.

I gogolfer 99 couple of other good spot on the Ottawa river maybe a little far but it worth the ride first the pier at the Wendover boat launch and at the Treadwell marina. These are very good fishing spot for bass pike walleye you name it. And its good acces for handicap persons.

Someone who works at Le Baron, forget his name, ALWAYS fishes there. He usually shore fishes though, but he now finally got a little boat. He catches every kind of species fishing opposite of the marina side. He usually heads down to near the end of the point, by the lighthouse.

He's caught pike, LM, smallies and has even seen someone catch a nice muskie there.

I haven't tried there much this season, but he speaks the world of it so I'll give it a shot sometime. let me know how you do.

If you are up for a drive, gogolfer, Calabogie Lake is great for shore fishing. The lake has a causeway about a Km long. Easily accessable, lots of panfish, lmb and some pike.
