I just remembered something and went to check. The Minn Kota endura max series are fully variable speed motors.
Does anyone know if they kick in slow or is the starting thrust pretty high?
If they are truly variable that would be a perfect solution for me. Speed at need but a nice slow troll.
Only down side is they only have 36" shafts ( i was hoping for 30").

One other thing to consider Rod is using a small outboard instead of the electric. I have a 1.5 hp for mine. No heavy battery to lug around and recharge and you'd have to fabricate some sort of support for the bottom of the canoe seeing as the Sportspals are pretty thin aluminum alloy. Plus if you were to go backwoods camping a gallon of fuel will last a weekend easily.

Don't let weight cause you confusion. While a 12' canoe may be nimble, I would lean more to a 14 /15' to optimize space down the road.
The difference in weight will be insignificant if you are just throwing it on the roof and not portaging. Remember not only will you have fishing gear, you will have a 40lb battery and it needs to be located so when you move in the boat it does not cause a weight hiccup. Don't ask me how I know...
And if weight is a concern, I would assume stretching out would be a good idea too. So get a canoe that allows you the freedom to move around a bit, stretch, adjust your position without fear of tipping. Leaning forward to tie a new lure on or pass a snack to your son. All very necessary.

Re: Canoes, Motors and Fishing enjoyment.
So the plan was to get the canoe and do a test drive this weekend..... Umm i didn't order that snow!!
Well i have got the roof rails installed, bought my straps and today i picked up a minn-kota 45 endura max at a great price with all the necessary goodies (deep cycle battery, trolling station, charger etc.). I confirmed with the manufacturer that this model has truly variable power ( barely spins when you start to apply the juice) and that the power consumption is also truly variable based on speed as opposed to the fixed draw at all settings of most models. Should give me good range. Picked up a transducer (suction cup) for my Helix 5 Ice that i bought this winter.
Next step is the Canoe! All you Lund owners may be laughing but this is a big thing for me....
