Summer (Un)Success Grade?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I have had a lot firsts this year....early winter walleye from Quinte,my first Brown trout ever with King-Me Charters,First Salmon caught in my boat, the best thing...was fishing with my Brother and a lot of Fish Hawkers John,RJ,BTS,Bacon,NormWare,jeff(lurker)Spinner...sorry if I forgot some...it's a age thing :? The fish...have not been real plentaful...but they were good quailty....so because of that ...and so much of the year left to go....so i'm giving the company I fished with an "A" :D :D ...the fishing a "B"..I think I can do better in the warm water spiecies :)

Well, my season so far started off slow... but picked up tremendously.

The one bright spot is the Rideau River in the Kemptville area. How that stretch of water continues to produce is a source of amazement for me.
The above photo was taken off my dock last night. Needless to say the Rideau around Kemptville has been a steady producer, but I find this year, with some of the worst weather has made for good... "cigar-boat" free fishing  Some evenings I only share the river with a couple other anglers. 8)

In my long winded diatribe last night I hope I conveyed the perspective of a fisherman who has awoken Methusah-like from a dream, transported in time to a place 10 years hence. Without last year or the year before as a guidepost my only comparisons are a decade old.

About my incoherant late night ramblings....I hit full stride at 11 pm and I have the sleeps habits of a vampire, an hour of banging out nonsense here sends me off to sleepytown.

It's been a couple months but the posters at the fly fishing board I used to frequent are still celebrating my move over here.

CCB.....in my last PM to you what did you think of the Danny Gallivanesque phrase..."casts of Homeric proportions" I liked that.

:) I'd have to say the summer has been about a "B" so far... I've seen a fairly diverse fishery and I'm hoping that the fall Salmon/Trout run will raise the grade.

On the down side, I've noticed many more boats this year, along with a real depreciated fish stock in areas that are accessible from shore. The weather, as has been stated, has been brutal, especially the wind conditions.

On the plus side, I've seen some real big fish. I've travelled as far as Gananoque, Massey, Grand Bend/Goderich and seen some amazing water. (Boy I wish I lived near the 1000 islands)

I'm going to keep the faith and hope for the best and who knows, I may stumble across that honey hole one of these days.

The fishing this year for me has been crap! I have yet to get any big LM unlike last year , as well as the walleye only being around 14-20". The weather has been awfull, very unpredictable and the cold fronts make it hard to find'm. I fished more this year compared to last year and am quite dissapointed. On the plus side, I caught my first 2 Musklie this year so that is a real plus!

I also like the fact that my girlfriend has fished with me more this year and she has really produced. She has nailed a 20" SM  on the Mississippi, as well as a nice 18 1/2 LM and a nice 28" Pike. So that has been satisfying, but the fishing has'nt :?

I hope it pickes up in the fall

This is my 1st season fishing exclusively for Muskies and I am very happy with my results considering I have zero experience. I've caught a beautiful 46" and 2 more in the mid 30". It has also been my best year for Pikes incidentally for numbers and quality (throwing those big baits paid off whereI didn't expect ...). I will mention that I've been out fishing at least once a week steady which has helped tremendously. I finally found my 1st hotspot for small muskies about 2 weeks ago and will be hammering it for 3-4 days straight next week during my vacation. In summary, I gave this season an "A".

With the occasional exception here & there, particularly those who fish for muskies & are having a good season, it seems many of us have found fishing to be somewhat off this summer.

Ganman, I know what you mean about comparing past & present, for I, too, am working off nearly 30 years of fishing memories & I recall those days where fishing fantasies came true. I'd like to think my skills have increased over the years, so then why has my "net harvest" (bad pun) decreased? For the past several years, my role as Mommy has grossly cut into my fishing time. There's reason #1. But I think there's more to it than this, &/or 1 season of bad weather. I agree that increased fishing presence/pressure has negatively influenced the bite and perhaps the populations of some game fish.

I'm glad to hear the summer has produced some great & memorable firsts for some of you. I really enjoy reading your posts & seeing pic's.

I'll be heading out either today or this wknd to stock up on some different tackle in an effort to entice this summer's finicky fish to my boat. I just read an article in In Fisherman about drop shot fishing, & also got some good advice & tips from my veterinarian-friend about the same tactic, and am eager to give it a whirl. This would be a different style of fishing for me, and I think that's what I've got to do this year to change my luck.

So, whether your fishing is awesome & excellent (God Bless your eternal enthusiasm & optimism Float Fishin'!) or rather lacklustre (such as with Bassstalker & myself!) ... hey, at least we're FISHING, right? :D

year to date:

Post by Jigs »

So far this year numbers of fish caught are up; sizes are average.

Had the good fortune to hit a few lakes with a couple of hawkers, and was put on to some nice fish.

Locally, the bass are there, but its necessary to work a bit harder for them.

Pike are abundant, a paucity (nice word) of large ones however. Lost what would have been my personal best earlier in the year on the Rideau River while fishing for pickerel. We got to see her up close and the hawker I was with swears it would go at least 14 lbs. I ain't sayin.....just wish I could have got her in and weighed her..........oh well

Not a bad year so far; weather mostly sucks........what ken ya do?

Since retiring, have been able to spend more hours on the water, thats probably why the numbers are up.........my skill remaining constant 8) . Gotta look at all the logical explanations eh?

Hope everyone has a good "second half??"

Regards: Jigs.

For me I'd have to say my best year yet. I credit that mostly to the fact that I now have my own boat, which I love dearly, and also because I've put everything else on the backburner. I will say however that the fishing has been weird for the fact that most of the time the fish turn on around 1pm, which is usually opposite for me at least.

Muskie fishing has definitely been good with at least a fish on everytime I've been out and a few multi fish days. It was my first year in Bass Tournies (which I've wanted to do since I was 15) and did what I set out to do, learn the ropes. I've learned to slow down and give topwater a rest and have found a magic bait which catches the bass all on its own 8) Had a great time up at Muskrat with the Fish Hawk gang this spring and had a chance to fish with the MuskieMagnet himself and held my first 50"! (not mine) I've had my first multi walleye day, my first mooneye, first couple channel cats, almost had my first gar, and hopefully will have a chance at some chrome in the near future. I'm looking forward to starting to seriously target muskie this fall and am hoping to break the 45" mark. All in all I'd rate my summer an A++ with the fishing an A+, with the exception of Big Rideau Lake which shut me down twice

A big fat D mainly due to my boat issues. When I did get out, which wasn't often, it was tougher than usual. I blame the surroundings

Namely using a 12 footer instead of sitting in comfort.

Best so far was as nice 42" Muskie....

Coulda been worse...may not have got out at all

Gone Fishin' -- I'm very jealous. Sounds like a GREAT summer for you! Keep it going! Send a little luck my way.

WIG, join the club, but at least you have been out & about on some nice vacations this year. Once you have your new boat, you'll be back at the head of the class, I'm sure! :D

Interesting comments Ganman. I am coming up to charleston after a 20 year hiatus. For years we went up there for our annual trip for Lakers. I have not seen any pictures of Charleston lakers that can compare to what we use to catch back then. You are correct about about the focus on Lakers. We never targeted bass or pike. I hope my cherished memories will not be tarnished too much. Although we will do some fishing for Lakers, we will be targeting bass and pike because of the lack of downriggers.

On that subject, do anyone else use divers for lakers? I bought a couple fish seekers and dipseys.

The year so far has been extremely good. Even though I've been restricted somewhat to "urban fishing", the flyfishing for smallies has been very fuitful this season with one hog over 19" and countless others more than 14".

And having seen first hand one of the Rideau river monsters trailing one of my catches, I'll be investing in some "big" new flies and wire leaders to tangle with them! ;-)
