Lunkers and Bunkers 2016 - Lengthy report.

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Lunkers and Bunkers 2016 - Lengthy report.

Post by CCLad »

Good day fellow Hawker's. I thought I would take a few minutes to say thanks and provide a report on what was a fantastic day of fishing, golf and fun!

First off, a BIG thanks to fellow Hawker - "Bucky the Dog" for all of his efforts putting together a well organized, fun and unique event. I would also like to say thanks to the Fish Hawk - behind the scene team, for keeping and maintaining this fantastic website. It truly is a great site to gain and share information and meet new friends!

They day began at with the alarm going off at 4AM (Ouch, on the plus side I managed to behave appropriately the night before which was a task in it's self as I'm on holidays.... :) !!! ) We, my good friend and fellow Hawker - "FridayKnight", arrived at the WA Taylor launch at 530AM for registration. The hours for fishing aspect of the tournament was 5-11AM. A 530am start was good enough for us (BTW - Again, being on holidays, those are two of my favorite words in the English language lol) We signed in and were greeted with smiles, Timmy's coffee, doughnuts and a nice gift bag to boot. (Again first class Bucky!)

Dropped in the boat and we were off. I haven't fished this stretch of water in almost 20 years (Boundary was the Manotic locks to the 416 bridge) but I know its a heavily weeded body of water. So after consulting the Navonics page here on Fish Hawk the night before (great tool RJ), we started with our plan. Well, we went through plans A-E with no success! Top water, spoons on pads, Texas rigs.... My buddy FridayKnight had 1 hit and missed it. After several hours of pitching everything we could throw Zilch! Bass and pike were jumping all over the place, you would think top water would produce something! At one point my buddy looks down off the bow and spots a4-5 foot Muskie swim by, hellow heart rate and vigoruos casting... no avail! Sooo, plan "F" - F for failure, not being an option I decide that its time to target eye's (more my field of fishing) and screw the bass. We started working weed lines trolling cranks and good day, along came this girl:

Nice chunk of fish. We continued to work the weedlines and found another taker:

both fish were fat healthy eyes. The pictures don't really show their girth, but I had issues getting my hand around the shoulders of the 2nd eye. By this point - It's cooking hot on the water and time has run out...

Heading back to the launch, not sure what to expect with regards to where we may be sitting (The tournament is points based - 5 pts for a bass, 10 pts for a Pike, 15 points for a walleye and 20 for a musky) After talking to several other boats apparently it was a tough bite for all.... Lots of boats reporting 1 bass, no fish etc... Hmm maybe we are in the mix (with the weight of representing Fish Hawk on our shoulders lol)

Pull the boat and off to the course we go. A quick shower - Free lunch then a peak at the leader board.... Were sitting in 6th out of 30. Top 5 get prizes... (The leaders have caught 28 BASS, another team had caught 6 walleye and 2 bass so catching these guys isn't an option. Hmmm - I'm thinking time for some swing lube (Bud) and get our "A" game together for the 2 man scramble. We got paired up with the two lads leading the tournament - Ian and Jeff (great guys and it was a pleasure to meet you both) obviously they know what they were doing on the water (They have a sponsor and fish bass tournaments all the time.) - and they can golf too :)

My buddy and I end up shooting -2 for the round (pts scored for golf add to your total - Eagles, birdies pars etc get various pts. Dinner was fantastic - NY Striploin with a large scampi - tough to beat :) After dinner the awards - We end up in 5th place (making the board) and I got the biggest Walleye award to boot!

All in all an absolutely fantastic day full off fishing, golfing meeting new friends and the odd beverage. I highly recommend if you like golf as well as fishing - Sign up next year!

Thanks again Bucky and RJ!!! GREAT DAY!

Thanks, Cclad, if it wasn't for the fisherpeople(we did have a female entry this year) we would not have an event, so thanks to the participants.
Also thanks to the sponsors that helped us out Pirates Cove Marina, First Mate Lures and of course Fish Hawk.net. We are evolving this event every year and adjusting how the scoring is done to best accommodate the fisherpeople and golfers alike, it was the first time that the fishing won(ran away with!!!) the event so that was great too see. I have a new scoring system in mind for next year which I think will keep every team a little closer and more competitive. The winning "Worm Burners" team(they are fish hawkers as well) were also very good on the course so they were solid all around.

Congrats to the Winners
1. Worm Burners(Ian and Jeff) 179pts 2. Fish and Chips(Jack and Sean) 137pts 3. Levac Flat Free Tires(Marc and Martin) 88pts 4. The Foster Children, me !! ( Darrell and Mike) 81pts 5. Fish Hawk 1 (Tim and Jason) 68pts

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR DURING ONTARIO FREE FISHING WEEK (Date TBD)
