Lake Ontario Silver

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Lake Ontario Silver

Post by JimW »

My buddy and I hit the big water the other day looking for trout and salmon.

Our first spot we fished from 80 to 140 feet of water, we marked some fish and hard several nice fish follow our baits as we watched them on the sonar, but no luck in convincing them to bite, so after a couple hours we pulled our gear.

After a quick 7 mile run, and locating a bit of bait we set up in 50 feet and started to troll, we again marked some fish and bait, but no takers... the all of a sudden FISH ON!!!!

We finally hooked into one on the meat rig on the dipsey diver. A few seconds into the fight a nice rainbow trout makes a nice jump, then we realize that fish is on another rod.... double header... after a bit of a fight... just like that 2 rainbows in the boat!!!

We continue working the area in 50 to 60 feet of water running spin doctor flies combos, spoons and flasher twinkie rig combos. Throughout the late morning/early afternoon we hook into some more fish... we land some, we lose some.... unfortunately no salmon in the boat but we did get some nice rainbow trout!!!

We caught fish on all of our baits, but Kate's Kustoms Twinkie rigs with my own cut and cured herring strips took half of our fish.

We were a little rusty losing a few fish... hopefully we will be better on the rods next trip out. My buddy was pretty good on the net though we were 4 for 4 netting balloons. lol

All in all a good time on the water.... I might just try it again some day.

Here are a few the visited the Tracker.

Hey Wally,

I am just running a Humminbird Helix 5 and a Raymarine Dragonfly 7 sonars, nothing too fancy. I am still learning more about reading sonar, when I am fishing walleye or something near bottom or in weeds I am still not great at picking out if it is a fish or a rock or and old boot. lol Open water on the Great Lakes it is a little easier.

Here is a school of bait on Lake Ontario from this weekend, the line going through is my downrigger weight.

Thanks man!!!

Ya the last few trips Lake Ontario has been like glass so great to rip around covering water, my boat is only 17.5 feet long, so I need to make the most of the calm days.

The last couple years I did not fish much due to health issues, I had double bypass heart surgery February 2020 at 47 years old... feeling great now... so tying to make every moment count!!!
