I went out Saturday morning on the big Rideau for trout opener. Got out a little later than I wanted didn’t get fishing until 7. But I still found them!! Started the morning jigging and landed 2 right away.
I found them again jigging using the jigging rap and the good old hyper rattle. Even got a new PB for lake trout on the Rideau.
Sunday I decided to take a friend out that hasn’t gotten a lake trout before. I showed him the jigging technique quickly. Then found the trout with the fish Finder and his first drop he gets one.
He then got 2 more. I missed some but didn’t land any this morning. He missed a couple more then the bite shuts right off.
So we decided to switch it up too pike and manage too land quite a few but no big ones
Got them on the new magnum jigging rap. Caught a few more but then the bite slowed down so I tried moving spots no luck so then I tried trolling for a bit with no luck. But then as I was reeling in from a troll right as the spoon came out of the water a laker was chasing it and blew up on the surface. Couldn’t believe it.Zone 18 Trout Opener

Very nice ! Appreciate the report. That's pretty amazing that the Trout followed your spoon right to surface considering the water temps...it must've been hungry !
How deep were you jigging for them ?
How deep were you jigging for them ?
The tug is the drug..
Re: Zone 18 Trout Opener
This year they were deeper it seemed. 80-120ft was my prime depth. They were also not chasing the jigs as much. I was having good luck letting the jig down too bottom and jigging very close too bottom. Almost like fishing with a jigging rap for walleye.Corvus Lacus wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 6:53 am Very nice ! Nice! Do you have spot lock with your trolling motor? What do you do to keep the jig vertical and stop yourself from drifting?
I'm heading out for lakers next Friday and want to spend more time jigging and less trolling.

Now thats a day on the water which is worth the time catching.
Re: Zone 18 Trout Opener
Wonderful ideas! This year, it is believed the fish were hanging around in depths of 80 to 120 feet. It looks like a highly successful method, jigging along the bottom, much like walleye fishing with a jigging rap. I respect you sharing.Chasenic wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 10:33 amThis year they were deeper it seemed. 80-120ft was my prime depth. They were also not chasing the jigs as much. Re: Zone 18 Trout Opener
I have no trolling motor at all. My boat is a 15ft aluminum with 15hp tiller so I just use it too find the fish and stay on top. Trick is to use nice heavy lures like acme hyper rattle largest size or magnum jigging raps work good or if they’re really deep I’ll use 3oz jigging spoons.markusmarine wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2024 12:38 pm Nice! Re: Zone 18 Trout Opener
Thanks for the tips on lures I should pick some of those up. I was planning on using a tube jig sitting on a one ounce jigging spoon, blade baits, or 1/2 oz hair jigs but not sure if that will be heavy enough in 80 feet.
