I've never heard of a planner board set-up. What purpose does it serve? I checked out the link to see what they look like. From the design and the visibility pointers I take it that this is something you tow behind your boat, or set adrift near your rig.

97MachZ, planner boards are used to pull you lures you are trolling out from behind the boat and out to the sides. The design of the board does this.

There are 2 types off planner boards commonly used. The small inline ones like the yellowbirds that clip directly to your line and the big double boards that are attached to a planner board mast on your boat. Both are very proctive for trolling.

simply put....a planner board is towed by your boat,by design it will pull back and away from your boat ...distance is controled by how much line you want to let out.the purpose of panner boards ,is to move your bait away from the noise of your boat and present a more natural presentation, there are two types of planner boards....the big duel boards ,if you use these you should have mast , or mount a reel high on the boat some where, once the board is out and tracking beside your boat ....you let out the desired amount of line from your rod and reel...IE 100 feet, you then attach your fishing line to a release ,and you let the release slide down the planner board cord to the desired distancenow you are set up The other style is ,in line boards, much easyer to use and no special equipment, again you let out the desired line from your rod and reel, only this time with the inline boards ,you attach the board right to your fishing line,once this is done ,you just let line out from your reel to the desired distance from the boat, these are deadly for spring Browns and if you seen the pictures from Quinte ,you will see they are deadly on late fall walleye....hope this helps

Me and DV_8 made our own in-line boards for last weeks Quite blow out. We basically followed the instructions from Walleye guy's second web site. We used real downrigger clips instead of alligator clips. We ran them on Friday and found that they flopped over toward the rod side and didn't run out far enough. After looking at the guest speakers boards at the lodge that night we figured out why they didn't work properly. The clip connection to the board needs to be solid and not a split ring connection. We modified our boards for the next day and they worked great. I pulled a 28 1/4 inch eye out of the gap using one. It is recommended that you run in-line boards and not stand alones as they are far easier to use and you can do tighter turns when trolling. The big stand alone planners are not easy to turn and in big water chop they can flip and turtle and they drive down and cross up all your lines. Not good when your running 5 or 6 rods.
