Two most popular motors in the North are definetly Yamaha and Johnson.
Motors over 30 HP are probably 95% yamaha but under 30 I'd say 75% Johnson, this could have something to do with the area dealers, although all brands are easily accessible.
Folks liking to go to James Bay often or do most of their river travelling in higher waters prefer to use the Yamahas. People travelling in lower waters seem to prefer that their Johnsons get dragged on bottom.
Both are good motors I think, but I honestly don't know much at all about outboards. I do know Johnsons seem to beable to take the bigger pounding than the two though.

My motor: 1968 40 hp Johnson Super Sea-Horse Electric
Bought used 6 years ago for $300 with a extra parts motor also. Have not needed to use parts motor yet. Runs excellent. Only had to install a heli coil in the head for one cylinder when it was bought & replace a small fuel line under the cowl.

Nice

The only reason I bought my 15 horse 4st. Mercury was economics. It came in more than $1000 cheaper than it's Yamaha or Honda counterpart.
So far it's been a trooper. I've been out to Bluffs Bar on Erie about 5 times (22 mile round trip from Long Point PP) and a number of other day trips. I've never had a trip that ran my primary gas tank dry. (12 litres @ $0.75 per litre = $9)
My prop took a few on the chin and besides some scratches it's none the worse for wear. (Thank God for shallow drive!)
