We have 31 million ppl in Canada and as of last night Canadian citizens have donated 151 million dollars out of our own pockets to the Asian relief fund. As other countries send there fact finders and tie up valuable runway space with there aircraft,taking up space that should be reserved for cargo aircraft carrying in much needed Relief Aid and holding press confrences at the airport and saying to the world we will prove to the world we are a caring nation! Canada just proves what is already known in the world that they can count on us Canadians!!!

Just a heads up, regarding the tsunami disaster and charitable organizations providing financial relief...

If you haven't donated $$ yet, but plan to do so, PLEASE take the time to confirm how much of your actual dollar makes it to the victims. I was pretty surprised to learn of many well known relief organizations that, due to administrative costs & who knows what else, only send part of your donation to the cause. Some times much less than what I think is appropriate. Brian and I sent our donation to an organization that turns over 96% of the monies raised to the victims.

I am still in shock at the death toll and devastation overseas. It is heartbreaking...so many of the victims were children.

If your donation is in check form, make sure you indicate "Tsunami Victims, or Tsunami Aid", etc., on the memo line. According to a public radio segment I just heard, this in itself causes that check to become a legally binding document that requires the organization to route your money to the tsunami victims.

As another note, good points Wolfe. I made my donation directly to the Red Cross via the web. They give you the option of where to send the money, with the tsunami victims as one of the options.

And just a reminder, if you plan to donate, make it to a Canadian branch of whichever charity you prefer (e.g. Canadian branches of the Red Cross, Oxfam, Unicef, Doctors without Borders, etc.) The Cdn. goverment will match your donation, dollar-for-dollar, but tonight is the cut off date for this. Tax receipts for donations will also be valid towards your 2004 taxes, but only until tonight.

plus 350 million from the government for the effort. which at first i thought was alot but then i did the math and its like $11.29 cents each. I Thiink maybe we should give 5 times the amount offered and given. ( i wouldnt mind another $50. tax hike for this reason)
