Sorry to hear about your job Chris and Terry and I wish you good luck in the future.
Last summer in tournament season I spent over $3000 for the boat and the truck while towing. That being said, I plan to do more tounaments this year and travel farther distances so I when I think how much gas will be.
For people that are looking to buy a boat or motor this year here are couple of tips that can save you $ in gas;
1. always keep your motor tuned up.
2. a 4 stroke is better on gas at low to mid pin and will troll down slower than most 2 strokes.
3. the new hi preformance 2 strokes out on the market will be better on gas than a 4 stroke from mid to full throtle, specially when towing a tube or skiier.
4. don't overload your boat, less weight=better economy.

Now, have any of you fishermen ever seen a hearst pulling a U-Haul trailer. The old saying goes "you can't take it with you when you go for that long dirt nap so enjoy what you can while you can."

I just got a new Ram with a Hemi last month and she is a pig on fuel!

I haven't towed the boat yet but I think its going to be a pretty expensive summer.
Like big-o said its always nice to have someone help out with the fuel costs.

Actually it probably won't make a difference at all - those HEMIs have power to burn, and won't even notice there's a boat and trailer behind you. That was my experience with little 14' aluminum and a V8 Dakota, (which incidentally was suprsingly good on gas on the highway).

I got no boat, (anyone have one to give away?) and the only boat I have access to (Jersey-Man) only runs electric...

little 14' Aluminum with a 56# Minn Kota actually works pretty well... Moves us around Petrie pretty well, and it's nice and quiet... Besides, it beats shore fishing ANY day.

So, $2.19 / 3.7 = 59.1

( I was in the States 3 weeks ago and we filled up my buddies Honda civic @ $2.04 and a full tank was $18.00 USD )

With the exchange, The US still has cheaper gas prices


It drives me nuts. The Ford Anger is a bully on gas towing. It will definetly limit my trips.

Oppps, My conversion was wrong.

1 US gallon is equivalent to 4.5 Imperial liters.

So the above math should be

$2.19 / 4.5 = 48.6 cents. with conversion on the dollar it is still a little over .50 CDN a litre.

were you towing a boat??? heck I would to get off that cheap for a years fishing.....Fish-Hawk spent $4000.00, boat and Van....I was a tad over that, well a lot over that, but I went to some great places to fish, blew away all my Personal bests in one year, we boated over 34 Salmon(TKS Xenos) in 9 trips..caught My first brown trout(TKS King-Me), biggest Walleye I ever seen(TKS. you were right the first time! 1 US gallon is 3.78 litres

A Canadian gallon is 4.546 ltrs

Sorry about your work Seaweed. From your posts I've come to appreciate that you are a class act and there's no doubt a guy like yourself will land on your feet... Prayers inbound.

As for gas... it should be called "throw-away money". When I bought the Battleship, and the car for that matter, I seriously factored it in. So for me, this year, the price of gas won't be a factor. (Saturn + 15hp. 4st = )

Well said Big-O. Fishing doesn't come cheap when you're forking out money like that. I can't imagine anyone not wanting to chip in if they're fishing with someone with those kind of expenses.

Hopefully I'll try and match your last years Salmon output. Come on Port Dalhousie!

I agree that the gas prices will hurt everyone. This is the first year that I am going to have to slow down with all the travelling with the boat. I have something interesting though. Since the year 2000 I have kept ALL my gas receipts for each year and added them up.Here they are....
2000 ---- $3756.25
2001 ---- $4001.06
2002 ---- $3557.59
2003 ---- $4900.60
2004 ---- $5526.29
Total Hosing $21,741.79
96% of that money was all spent at Sunoco.
The worst part is half of that money goes to the government for taxes of money I have already paid tax on.(income tax) I had to make $30000 just to net the $21,000!!!!
The jump from my 100 hp to anything bigger is going to be suicide in my wallet.

Hey Seaweed sorry to hear about the job I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find something fast. As for the gas price it is what it is. I still plan to go to Port Hope, BOQ, and Charleston. It's gonna cost a bit more to fish this year, but it is still worth it to me.
