Inland Record Rainbow

I'm pretty sure the ontario record Rainbow was 29 or 34 or something and It was out of Lake Ontario, now here's the Question, what do you think the Biggest Inland lake Rainbow ever caught was in Ontario?? I was chattin with a lad the other day and he said he had a 16 pounder on the wall, and the lad who mounted it said that it was a big breeder? I didn't think they'd get that big, anyone know of any bigger?

Just the one I posted for Redz. That one was a 9lbs. I don't think they grew much bigger in inland lakes. I would like to see a pic of that 16lbs'r.
I do think it is possible, but doubt that they grow like that in quantity.

Here are a few of the better fish caught in Ontario waters:

Lake Simcoe, 1952, 18 1/2 lbs.

Near Brantford -no water given- 1958, 16-4

Georgian Bay, 1954, 14-4

St. Mary's River, 1925, 14-4

Nottawasaga River, 1952, 14-2

This info. came from a 1963 report I have, and I imagine better fish have been caught since.

Interesting fact- these fish are not native to eastern North America, and none existed here before they were imported, mainly from California Nevada, and Colorado starting in the 1880's.

For those who enjoy fishing for them, this is one example of introducing exotics that didn't result in disaster.

How come i have never heard of Rainbows in Simco, have they been fished out or are refering to Lakers when speaking about simcoe. My uncle has caught a lake trout the measured 24 pounds on his sping scale back in the late 80's

No, it is quite clearly a rainbow, not a laker.

This report came from an MNR (actually Lands and Forests at the time) biologist named McCrimmon. It was caught in Kempenfeldt Bay in Nov./52. Length 31 1/2", girth 23". It was determined to be seven years of age.

Are there no rainbows still lurking in Simcoe? Anyone know?

In alll my years i have never heard of one being caught there before this CCB. If they did exist in that lake at one time they do not anymore, i have never seen rainbows and simcoe even mentioned together. I wish they were.

Just did a quick search, and it showed rainbows were first stocked in Simcoe in 1918. They were still catching them in the late 50's so I would imagine there could still be a population there. No time to look further into this right now.

cause you would think that you would hear of one being caught every once in awhile but i have not ever. Thanks for the heads up i guess it is one more thing you can hope for when hitting Lake Simcoe.

Rich, Maybe try and get in touch with the Calabogie fish and game club. I know they keep track of some of the nicer fish being caught up there.

This one came from a small lake near Thorne (NE of North Bay). I snagged it (the pic) from the website of the lodge we go ice fishing at...its the biggest Rainbow (non steelhead) I've ever seen: 14lb/30"

2 winter's back,there was a 6 lb bow caught off Bear Point,in Kempenfelt Bay on Simcoe.

Not many around,but some.

The Ontario record still sits at 29 lb & change,taken from the Notty,back in the 70's.

Here's the 31 lb ,3 ounce lake.Ontario record(NY side),taken last summer.

Not sure what the inland lake record would be,if there's a category for it??

My dad's friend lives just outside of Beaverton, on Simcoe. Everyone once in a while a story of a rainbow being caught is told, but whether they're true or not remains to be seen. I think there is a population there, but a very small and scattered one based on the size of the lake.

My dad caught an 18 lb. Rainbow out of Ontario when I was a young'in (so not to long ago, 10 - 12 years back).

I've seen the Ontario record on a few websites being 29 lb. 1 oz., but where it was caught, or by whom, I haven't been able to find out yet.
