Any boat with a motor over 9.9 hp should have a vessel registration. It has a spot on the back for transfer similar to a motor vehicle ownership. You need to take that and your bill of sale to Canada Customs. There is no charge for the transfer.
Trailer is done at the licence bureau. You will need ownership and bill of sale.
I would recommend separate bills or itemizing the values (boat, motor, trailer).
Have the receipt broken into X dollars for the boat, Y dollars for the trailer.
You should get 2 an ownership/ registration for the boat, it should have the current numbers which are on the boat now. Those number made need to change if you are moving through the province.
Receipt + ownership to Canada Customs and Revenue to pay any taxes.
You should get 3 trailer registration.
Receipt + trailer registration (like you would have for a car), to Ministry of Transportation.
Don't pay the ferryman till he gets you those 3 documents, or you'll end up doing a Ransome and chasing your tail to get the docs straightened out.
Not sure if liens show up when you change ownership as in car.
The seller should be forthcoming and tell you, but you can't depend on that. If there is a lien, get a release from the particular bank which was financing for seller.......or don't buy it. You buy from a dealer, your'e in the clear, as in used car buying.
nice rig Steve. I just had my offer accepted on a used boat also. The guy ( a friend) is having difficulty in finding the papers for the boat But It should get all ironed out soon. I hope that you have a great season.
I have informed him(the owner) that he can get a copy of his Boat Ownership, from Canada Customs to do the transfer, what their hours are and where in Hamilton they are....
To separate the costs of the boat/motor from the trailer and to have his licence for the trailer.
Now to do a lein search....how do you do a court house search?
All this may delay the transfer, but better safe than sorry.
you may seperate all you want
but in the end you will pay at least gst
on the package...either now or later..
get the info it will be painless
except for the tax
