"Angler's Elbow"

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I feel a bit of elbow discomfort on a long day of fishing, but it's not from casting, it's from constantly holding the rod in the same hand. Therefore, a switch from spinning (left hand crank) to baitcasting (right hand crank), is as good as a rest. And switching back and forth all day can help stave off the pain all day. May not solve your problem completely, but it should help, anyway.

I had the problem to summers ago (not Crazy Hooks problem). I used the brace just below the elbow which helped and then I exercised it by squeezing a stress ball. It took all winter but by the spring it was better and I haven't had the problem since! I agree with the spining gear though because I never had the problem until I started flipping with a baitcaster for hours on end.

Toobinator,

The body gets used to the effects of cortizone really quickly, so that shots can go from lasting two months to only last two days.

Glucosamine (caplets) have been studied and used as of late for inflammatory problems such as tendonitis, arthritis and bursitis. This nutrient is known to improve joint health and quicken the healing process when damage occurs. It won't kill pain, but may just help prevent things from worsening or being prolonged.

And, also remember alot of "itis" concerns are inflammatory processes. Pain caused by inflammation. Tylenol, codeine and stronger narcotics may work to mask the pain, but Advil, Motrin or Naproxen will work to decrease inflammation as well as alleviate pain.

Ice not heat

Decrease repetetive motion (this is the tough part) such as casting, swinging a bat, racket or club, pitching, fly swatting in Ethiopia... etc

Joco, your back concern. Most people who suffer back problems do so for the reason that their abdominal muscles are much weaker. Condition them 3 times a week for 10-20 minutes as well as doing some stretching will help. Nobody likes to hear this most of the time, and some back problems are certainly structural d/t poor genetics or injury, but for most causes of back pain, stregthening the corresponding muscles (ie, the abs) will allow both back and stomach to work more efficiently together, promoting less wear on the back, and ultimately safer body mechanics when performing the activities of daily living.

Moondog is right, I have had the Cort. shots for the shoulder and have lived w/ good days and bad since. Of course I still heft q's of beef everyday so unless you change the motion you do to cause the affliction you may as well get used to it. Fact of life sorry to say.

The best thing to do is stay away from pain killers and cort shots, learn the pain find out where it hurts and what you are doing... If its tennis elbow you will have to start building up the muscles in your forearms, tris, and bi's this will take alot of load off and build that muscle right on the outside of your elbow. Start with hammer curls, then regular curls, and tricep extensions. Just rebuild your arm! I had the same problem i pitched hardball for many years, and had to hit the weights to solve that problem!

Bait caster's elbow

Post by Jabba »

The only thing that works is, after a day's fishing, lots of sex and alcohol. The pain will be there while fishing, but you won't care, you'll be looking forward to getting home.

You guys just need to go fishing more...than you'd be in better "fishing shape". All I can picture is a bunch of Husky Jerks gasping for air with a 8 inch perch in their laps.
