Catching Gar Pike on the Ottawa
Catching Gar Pike on the Ottawa
Went out to give the boat a test run yesterday before the weekend...As I was trying out the trolling motor I noticed a Gar pike at the surface. It stood there...what a beauty !
Could someone give me tips on catching Gar, I would like to get a picture of one.

Those fish are wild, the same happened to me saw bout 5 of them holding in a stagnent pool, came to the edge of the bank they didn't even move, one was almost 4 feet long at least, threw a spinner at him, he bit I hooked and lost him about 5 seconds later
, I've read a couple of articles and what not but don't remember, I think bacon knows or someone cause they caught one. Good luck.
Cheers

Gar pike have really got me going since last summer. I had a few encounters with them and my gf wanted to go stare at them more then she wanted to fish. I have done countless searches on the net for gar lures or ways of catching. The most interesting one is pictured below. It is simply a peiece of wood with a nylon rope tail screwed into this. Seems to work for Gar Man Jack in the states. My only question is how do you get the rope out of its teeth after catching it!

The other idea I have heard for a gar lure is using that net that float fisherman use (I think roe bags is what its called) Essentially you throw in a few small minnows into the bag and attach that to your hook somehow.
If you do end up catching any dont be shy to tell me how! I wanna get one of those beauties this year!

Gar Pike - Texas Style
Hey there, I was living in Texas for the past 4 years. Locals there told me they would catch Gar pike with a ball of dental floss! Rumor has it, they would tie it to a fly rod and cast it out. The gar would chomp down and get its teeth hung up in the floss.
Maybe would work???
