The City of Ottawa's medical officer of health is advising residents in the east end to stay away from the Ottawa River after a massive sewage spill at the Keefer Regulator in New Edinburgh.
Residents are being advised not to boat in the area or go near the water for the course of the weekend. A no-swimming advisory has also been issued for areas downstream from the spill.
"I've asked that those beaches immediately have a no-swim advisory. I think it would be imprudent for people to be in the water until we know what's going on," said Dr. Isra Levy on Friday.
City officials said a steel plate got stuck in a pipe at the regulator, causing a slow spill to begin at about midnight.
At midday on Friday, city officials redirected the sewage into the Ottawa River so they could determine what caused the spill.
By 1 p.m., it's estimated that about 6,500 cubic metres of sewage leaked into the river.
The city said the spill was under control by about 4 p.m. However, it is currently unclear how much sewage entered the water.
