Does it rev up in gear? ...or does it just stay at idle RPMs even though you are twisting for all it is worth?

Does it stall.. or sound like it's going to stall... or cough and sputter at all? ...or sound exactly the same?

Kind of a strange problem...

Are you certain that it is going into gear? Do you hear/feel the click?

I can rev it right up in neutral then let it idle flick it in forward and then it will just rev a little higher than idle with the throttle twisted to full

Sounds like spark problems. Either a spark plug or coil.

While running in neutral, disconnect one of the spark plug boots. If it dies immediately, the faulty plug or coil is the one that is still connected.

I hope that it is not CDI power pack... they are kind of expensive. Coils and condensers are a lot cheaper!! You may also be lucky and it is just a plug!

Get a cheap spark tester ($5 to $10) from Partsource or NAPA while you buy replacement plugs.

Good luck and post your findings!

I had an issue with my Merc a few years ago. Sounds like what I was going through. It was a stater.....not sure if it's spelled right.

Good luck,

Good call DSer... but I don't think that the 6hp OMCs have a stator.

If it is a 1977 it looks like this;

No CDI either which is good!!

I had a 20hp Evinrude that I picked up for cheap because of the same problem. Turned out the previous owner changed the fuel line but didn't properly route it and ended up putting a slight kink in it. It had enough fuel to rev up in neutral but once under load it would stall.

Craig, I don't even know what a stator is/does. Wouldn't know one if I tripped over it. :oops: :shock: :roll:

I just know that's what was wrong with my Merc.
