I've caught these fish on 3 different lakes in close proximity to one another on the Quebec side. It's not a sucker as it doesn't have the extendable "lips" on the lower jaw. It doesn't seem to match up with what I see on the internet as being a Whitefish or a Lake Herring (unless they're a particular strain of these species).
It just looks like a giant minnow. I've caught them up to 2 pounds (the one in the picture is about 1 pound) and they do seem to school. I've caught them while trolling or casting.
I think it's what is called a "Fallfish", a large member of the minnow family. I caught a few in Big Cedar Lake a few years ago. Google "Fallfish" and see what you think.
