That was FUN! 2 Walleyes (my first, ever!) and a bunch of LM's in the .5lb or less category.

Many thanks to Todd and Jerry for sharing the water- it was very nice meeting you both and I hope to make it out to a few Tuesday evening events soon.

I left early- wader problems...I felt that my right leg was a little 'sloshy'- turns out the stitch on the inside right knee let go. Had a nice 6" gap letting in a LOT of water. It was refreshing :)

Pulled out the sewing machine and re-did the seam. Did a fair nice job (if I do say so myself!), tested them after and they are as good as new!

Cheers,

Jean

Jean,

It was great meeting you. I'm glad to hear that you managed to repair your waders. Mine, on the other hand, are toast - but they're 14 years old and don't owe me anything.

We picked up a bunch more fall fish, pan fish, and small bass and Todd picked up one not so small bass(Todd - will you post a pic of your baby?) Todd also stirred up a good sized Muskie (with his foot)

After Todd gave me one of his bead head olive woolly buggers, my fishing picked up significantly - Thanks Todd.

So, where to tomorrow morning :D ?

Jean,

It was nice to meet you this morning. Sorry to hear you had a wader malfunction. You were catching LM? I think I had around two dozen SM. In the 6 years that I've been fishing this stretch of water I've only had one LM.

Jerry, Glad to hear that the fish liked the fly I gave you. I'll be tying some more up this weekend. I'll give you a couple the next time we hook up.

As for the bass, my guess is 17" and fat. Maybe 3lbs. For some reason I can't upload the picture to FH. I'll post it when I can. The muskie that I spooked was a good 4'. I'm glad that I didn't hook the rock bass that I was originally casting at, as the muskie was about 3' away under some reeds. It would have been game over for me with my 4wt. LOL

Cheers,
Todd

Todd- either the smallest lm's I've caught to date or the biggest mouthed sm'
s :)

The wader issue was kind of disappointing- they are in their 4th season and should have remained trouble-free for a while, but it's all fixed up and I'm good to go!

Glad to hear that you had some continued success- that one pool on the West side after the 2nd rapids was where both Walleye were and some nice sm/lm's as well. Same area I caught a "rock" that turned out to be a nice lunker, the last time I was out with Tim.

I hate to admit this: caught both Walleye on a #6 bead-head WB, black marabou tail and chenille with #2 red hackle... I've just never, ever had a strike with the WB's. Guess I can't say that anymore :)

The TFO Signature 5wt was quite nice today- was shooting about 14' of leader/tippet to get down to the Walleye: not easy to do as I found out!!!

On holidays all of next week- planning on doing some prospecting around my in-law's cottage in the Calobogie/Black Donald Lake area...any recommendations?

Cheers,

Jean

I went back to the same place this morning. Caught a whole bunch of rock bass & small SM and two 1lb-ish SM. I had one other fairly large (maybe 2lb) SM break off as I grabbed the line to remove the hook. It took Todd's fly with him :x

Saw a couple of big carp swimming in circles in one of the pools.

What a great way to spend a morning.

Yeah, trying to cast a weighted fly on a 14' leader isn't very fun. Myself I tend to keep my leader/tippet length below 9' when I'm bass fishing. For that particular stretch the holes (with the exception of the two downstream of the dam) don't get much more than say 6' deep, so depending on the weight of your fly it will get down to the bottom pretty easily.

Well I was moving houses this weekend and couldn't make the fun. I really cannot wait to get back out... it's even worse now, because my fly tying is completely halted until I get some space built/setup in the basement office for it... which could be a few weeks... I'll have to find an interim for sure.

Sounds like a great morning fish... I hope it works as well in the evenings... I'm going to try to hit it this week as it is only 5min from my house.

Here's the pic of Saturdays SM. Who says there's no fish in the Rideau. ;-)

The reel is 3" in diameter for perspective.

Niice looking bass. That would have put up a good fight on the 4 weight :)

Jerry,

I take it you'll need a couple more of my "special" flies? Next time try to wear out the fly before you lose it. ;-)

Hey,

I did try to wear it out. In fact, those killer rock bass were doing their best to mangle it. Unfortunately, between my mis-handling of the fish and my 4x tippet, I lost it before its time.

I won't be able to make it out tonight, but I'll gladly take another fly the next time we meet.

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry,

As a general rule of thumb, when I'm fishing for bass I don't fish anything less than 3X.

3x is the way to go for streamers. The flourocarbon I use for tests out at 8.8lbs. If I break off a bass on that then I'm doing something wrong or the tippet has a nick in it.

I had been using a straight piece of 10lb mono all morning, but it was getting short and rather mangled and all I had with me was the 4x (poor preparation and planning on my part). Murphy's Law being what it is, I hit the "big" bass on my first drift with the new stuff.

I learned my lesson.
