Boat Insurance

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Welcome aboard big chris :!: I was insured with Halifax insurance at one point, only because they had my house too! It has since been switched to ING insurance....Don't have the numbers handy (I'm at work). Shouldn't be hard to locate in the book though! I can get the name and number if you have trouble finding it...

Hi Guys & Gals

I was just reading thru some old posts ,when I came across this thread!

I was going to make a new suject on insurance...but since this one is here I'll just add to it!!

First of all M.T. RJ you seem to have pretty good rates...I'M paying $926.00 per year  :( Which I believe is way to much...three times the amount for my house and out buildings!! Is there a company that just deals in boats , snowmobiles ,4 wheelers....ect.i have to believe that there is a cheaper rate out there some where....I am in the process of talking to Gray Power....any other suggestions

Big-O...
Price of insurance is going up...if you fish tournaments you will get a nice insurance bill in the mail. I am also looking to change to a company that tailors to Tournament anglers and boats that have all the extras...like $3500 worth of lures onboard ...heck won't even mention the rods, reels and electronics

I pay $360, 14' boat, 25hp 4 stroke, 1200lb trailer. Apparently this size boat is in demand. I'm with Johnson as part of the home insurance.

I just got my policy out to check but most marine policies are the same. They cover your hull small, amount of medical and liability if you want more you will have to put a rider on your house insurance. As for fishing gear put a rider on it and take photographs of everything. After my boat was broken into my insurance agent told me "this is post 911 no receipts or pictures to prove you owned it no payment" after months of searching holiday photos and visa bills I got $2500 for over $6000 worth of stolen gear! It took almost a year to settle, and it was very frustrating. The claim was through our house insurance because the boat insurance only has $1000 personal effects, and your fishing gear is just that. If you are worried take a rider on your house insurance and keep every single bill you get for purchases, and take pictures of everything you now own but have no receipts for, just a some hindsight.

I might be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure my broker told me the insurance companies will only insure boats under a house or apartment policy...they won't separately insure a boat like a car or motorcycle. Mine is under the house policy and seems to me anyone I've talked to about this is the same.

It's interesting that this topic comes up now as i'm just looking through my house/boat insurance renewal right now.... I have my boat on the house too.

It's something which we all pay too much for and lets face it we never know how good it really is until we have to use it... I actually called mine up today to send me a sheet explaining what is and isn't covered... Anything that is permenantly with the boat is covered such as trolling motor.. batteries.. electronics.. lifejackets etc... anything you place in the boat such as rods, reels lures etc... is under your house insurance as something that is temporarly away from home. I know some items you have to declare but i asked about fishing equipment and they said you didn't have to.

Also many insurances will only cover the cash replacement cost at the time something happens so there's little point in geting 20k of insurance if you're boat is only worth 10k... I've readjusted mine down this year as it has probably lost a little of it's value now.

I know i'm probably paying too much but who isn't.. i think mine is about $450 which for a 15ft with a 30hp sounds on the high side compared to some posts here.... there again at the time i got the boat i tried 4 insurance brokers and went with the one that seemed the best price and coverage.

Don't forget to pay for liability insurance.... the day you lose control of your boat run over a skier and then crash into that $500,000 cruiser is the day you'll need it !! I think i pay an extra $20 a year for it so make sure you have it.

MT yours is sounding cheap now i bet :!:

I too am looking for a new insurance company that deals with tournament anglers. Right now my boat is covered under my house policy and I just got my renewal notice and I'm paying $725.00 for an 18ft with a 175HP. This only covers the boat motor and trailer with $2 million liability. The electronics, tackle, rods/reels are said to be covered under my contents insurance of the house.

Why do you need special insurance to be a tournament angler? From what I read a guy like Markus is on the water as much if not more than you guys.

fishforfun- you don't need special insurance to be a tournament angler.

Various companies restrict the boats they cover based on HP, maximum speed, etc. Some will not cover boats used in tournaments based on the fact that there is a  race  at the start of every tournament.

Each company decides on its own who they will and will not insure. Some companies will insure boats on separate policies. Some will only insure your boat as a rider to your homeowners policy.

The combinations are endless. BUT- as for coverage of your equipment under your homeowner's policy- there almost certainly will be a limit covered under the basic policy, and it almost certainly will not come near covering an average tournament angler's equipment. You'll need a special rider and pay extra.
