Lure-making Clubs?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Thanks Smitty! That would be great! :D

So here's what I've come up with aside from a room in a Church somewhere, though I haven't made any calls in regards to that yet. I may have to ask a favor of one of you to call some Ottawa Churches to inquire on my behalf as my long distance phone bill to Canada is getting rather large at this point.. hehe.

I made calls ALL day yesterday and the best deal I've come up with so far is this:

The City of Ottawa Community Centre in Cyrville (I actually don't know where this is as I've never been there before, but from what I understand it's more or less central Ottawa) offers a room to fit up to 40 people for $5.34 per hour. The only catch is that someone has to sign a contract and book in advance and it has to be two hours minimum. For example, if you guys want to do this once a week for two hours, you have to pay one month in advance. So that will roughly be about $50-60 per month.

Maybe we can start a list of people who are definitely interested enough to show up as often as possible.. decide if this will be weekly or bi-weekly or once a month.. and then maybe we can try to have everyone pitch in on the cost of renting the room.

They offer catering, but I thought that was a bit fancy. Everyone can bring their own supplies and their own snacks.. a potlock. Also bring their own tackle and pictures and stuff on the first day to kinda tell stories and get to know each other in person, if you all haven't met each other yet.

So, that is the cheapest I've found out so far. Anyone willing to make some calls to local Churches for me just to inquire about free rooms for get togethers? I would appreciate the help. The only thing I ask is if you can try and make it around the downtown to east end Ottawa as my father relies on OC Transpo and bussing can be a pain in the butt if the routes aren't frequent.

As I said before, this is my first time trying to organize something like this, especially from so far away! hehe. So let me know what you guys think about the community centre or Church idea.. maybe someone can start a poll to see how many people would be willing to do this.

I need help on where to go from here.

Thanks!

I'd surebe interested-seeing as how I'm retired now
and really can't justify spending as much as I used
to on muskie lures. Not that I need any more but
it sure would be a rush to catch a muskie on a lure
you designed and made yourself. Also a good way to
pass the long old winter!Deal me in if this gets off the
ground!

That's me that's doing the class in Thornhill. I know it's a long way for you guys to travel - many hours of driving (I know my boat came from Pirate's Cove Marine), but it's worthwhile for anyone who wants to learn how to make muskie/pike cranks, jerks, gliders and wire baits like buckies and spinnerbaits.

I'll try to check in and answer any questions anyone might have.

It's a very cool feeling catching ANY of Mother Nature's fishes on something you made. I got my start when I was a kid making spinners for trout.

Good luck with the club - makes me wish I was closer to you guys!

I have 2 very young boys so time is very presious (sp?) and I cherish any moment I can for some peace and quiet.

All this to say that I would like to write a small article on what I have learned so far about making my own spinners but don't really know when I'll be able to get the time to but certainly would be very pleased to pass along a bit of lessons learned.

I am putting together another order this week for some crank baits I want to make to be used at the westmeath weekend coming up and I am sure there will be a learning curve for that as well.

I have said this before, practice and don't expect to get it right the first time but don't worry either, some parts are re-useable and over all it's a lot cheaper than buying and then you land your first fish on one of your own and the rest is history.

Another piece of advice for the beginner....KISS

Keep
It
Simple
Stupid

I went from making simple colors to doing elaborite combonations and now thru experience I am back to simple colors, I'm keeping it simple.

Here's an example of the KISS method

These are the 2nd batch of spinners I made. I used nail polish thinned out for an air brush. Nail polish is good, it's naturaly hard and has high gloss.

Now here is my latest spinner I made

What's the biggest difference? I painted the first set myself, the black one I bought with an already painted head, same assembly process, same ability to customise etc but I saved myself a lot of time and effort by buying an already painted head. Cost difference? Less than $1.00.

It's possible, but the likelihood for this spring may be an issue. Already time is running out.

I'm always happy to entertain any questions anybody has if that helps in the short term.

I just got my order of crank baits. basicaly it's 2 sizes of big-o's, one set deep running and the other a shallower bait. Some assembly required but I need to paint them.

I was going to go with nail polish again, it's very tough and already has a hardener and a gloss built in, but a bit tougher to work with in an air brush. I dilute it 50 - 50 with lacquer thinner (make sure you wear a mask).

Question to anyone else who has painter their own lures....what paint did you use? I think they look neat without the paint too so I am actualy going to leave one of each not painted and use it au naturel. I bet it will work :D

And when I am done I have a really neat idea to try and will post pics of my new secret weapon.

How's that?

I'm changing my mind and going back to enamel because nail polish is really really hard to clean up the air brush afterwards, but I may go with the nail polish hardener after paining, but just a thought right now.

The accitone (sp) is the thinnner in nail polish and that is bacicly model cement. might not be an issue but would suck to find out turnd them in to a pudel of mush.

Thanks

I was looking at my set up, that's all I can do right now, still too cold in the garage to paint, and I couldn't help but remember how difficult it was to clean up after using nail polish and I have decided to go back to using the enamel model paint. I'll be looking for a clear coat but I am not going to worry about it, if the lure gets scraped up I'll just repaint it again.

I'm going to leave one of each unpainted, they look skeleton like and can't help but hink a fish would like to chomp on one of these.
